So many issues upgrading from 1Password 6 to 1Password 8 Free Trial

July 7th On my Apple Mac computer I upgraded from 1Password 6 to 1 Password 7 and to 1 Password 8 for the free 14 day trial and I got this pop up.

Don’t make any changes in 1Passord until we contact you, if possible.

So NOT a great start!  I did a Chat and I request a support person to contact me and receive email that they have received my request and I get ticket no.

July 8th.  No emails and I checked spam.  I decide to look around 1Password 8 since my 14 day trial has started to tick away.  I have added the extension and two iPhones. I notice that I have TWO of everything.  Upon further investigation I find that I have 4 vaults.  “Personal” with 642 items,  “Imported default” with 642 items,  “Imported Passports” with 1 item and “Passports” with 1 item.  ALL the Personal and Imported default are duplicates.  The only difference is in the Imported default vault there is the SAME tag in every item.  TAG:  From 1Password 7 2026-07-08 02:17  I again did a CHAT and was requested a support person for this issue so looking for duplicates doesn’t work because of the tag.

July 9th I finally receive an email from support asking me an array of questions that I answered in my reply email as soon as I saw the email.

July 10th (today) NOTHING from know one!  How long does it take to get support?  I’ve been using 1Password since 2011 and really resisted moving to the subscription but want to give it a try.  I fell like I can’t play around with it until I hear from support.  This is frustrating and my husband is ready to give up on 1Password for the lack of easy quick support!

Do I wait?  Do I try and make changes?  How best to remove the duplicate items?

Thanks in advance.

Terry

Yes, you wait.

No, you don’t try to make changes.

Merging, which includes deduplication, has been requested many, many times, with no sign of 1Password offering any indication that they want to address this admittedly tricky problem. After your other issues have been addressed, you will likely have to rely on Watchtower and manual effort.

You are in a somewhat precarious position as a result of upgrading across multiple major versions in which much changed, and will likely need some specific guidance to ensure that you end up in a desirable situation.

1Password support became much slower a while back, resulting in a lot of customer frustration as evidenced by the number of posts - especially by newly registered users, which 1Password has consistently failed to publicly acknowledge and still appears to not be trying to fix

Thank you for getting back to me. I will wait….hopefully it will be before the 14 day free trail is over.

I know have another issue and I’ve searched and can’t find a definite answer. I even tried there CHAT. I’ve received two emails from [removed by moderator] wanting me to verify my email address by clicking on a link in the email. I worry about phishing so I will not click on their link unless I get conformation from support that this is a legitimate email. I’ve looked all over my account and can’t find a way to verify an email. You would think that a company that needs to keep accounts safe would in this day and age have a way to login to your account and do what an email has asked since it takes DAYS to get a response from support.

Thanks again,

Terry

Not clicking on email and being suspicious is the right response. If more did this, then the world would be a better place.

Notwithstanding this, using a web service to verify an email address is legitimate process, so good judgement is needed. Carefully matching the domains of the web site and email sender and completing the process which you initiate in a short time is usually sufficient, though not perfectly safe against all threats.

I am happy to report that 1Password support did get back to me.  They have told me that they have checked and it is now safe to make changes and also told me which vaults to delete and how to do it.  It all went very well.  They have even given me my lost days to test 1Password!

Hi @utahtea, I’m so glad to hear it's all sorted! We're sorry the wait added stress to your trial, and we appreciate your patience. Enjoy the extra days, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything else.
