Too many clicks to fill in password in browser extension

Regarding click 1 can you double-check the following setting:

1. Open your browser.
2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar.
3. Click Autofill in the sidebar.
4. Make sure that "Offer to fill and save passwords" and "Show autofill menu on field focus" are turned on.

One thing bugs me UX-wise as an ex Lastpass user. Lastpass used to automatically fill-in username and password fields, the 1password browser extensions doesn't do it, i need to to make 3 clicks.

This is by design for security reasons. We deliberately never fill your username and password into a website unless we receive explicit consent from you to do so. There are some attacks that would enable a malicious actor to steal your username and password if 1Password did automatically fill those fields without you first giving it the go-ahead. Hi @1P_Dave Thank you four your detailed, excellent reply. I kind of expected that you do not autofill for security reasons, makes sense.

Regarding click 1: Those settings are on in the configuration of the Chrome browser extension.

But no joy, i always have to click once into the form field in order to make the browser extension appear.

There's also this button in the browser extensions menu. I don't understand what it does, respectively it does nothing on my system. Can you explain?

Hi @cramcram, the "Autofill" button is another option that will autofill your credentials on the page if it's recognized and associated with the item.

As for the issue with the first click. Is this happening on every site, or a specific one?

Did some testing. The issue with the first clicks occurs one some sites, not on all. Some examples:

@cramcram that's very interesting. I can reproduce the behavior on those websites. I'll check with our developers and get back to you about it. In the meantime, could you let me know if you're able to fill your logins normally after clicking into the fields on the https://backstage.instrumentor.ch/de/login and https://acdid.acdsee.com/login websites? I just want to double check.

I've chatted with the team about this behavior. The websites that automatically show suggestions from 1Password have coded their login fields with HTML attribute 'autofocus'. The 'autofocus' attribute allows for an element to be focused on page load. This essentially puts a cursor inside the element, which is what triggers the suggestions from 1Password to appear.

The websites that do not automatically show suggestions are not using the 'autofocus' attribute. I'm afraid that we cannot change the code on those websites. However, there is a way to quickly focus on those login fields and to get 1Password's suggestions to appear. When you're on one of those websites, press Tab on your keyboard to focus in on the login fields.

Additionally, when you're on one of those websites, you can invoke the Command+\ shortcut to improve the overall experience. Here's what that does:

1) If you only have one login on the website, this shortcut will fill your login to the fields.
2) If you have multiple logins on the website, this shortcut will open the Quick Access menu which would show all related logins. Click on the login you want in order to fill it.
