Trouble using 1P for passkeys with Firefox

Hi. I have 1Password at home. I and my spouse use it with 2 iPhones, a Windows 10 PC and a Windows 10 laptop. All are up to date.  I just decided to start considering using passkeys. As a start, I thought I'd use 1P to set up and use a passkey with Amazon. Setting it up was easy, and 1P shows my Amazon account as having a passkey.

I tried signing into Amazon from the laptop using Firefox ver. 138.0. After entering my username I selected "passkey," and got this notification.

The only option was to hit cancel. When I did that, I got this error message.

As I searched for answers, I saw some messages suggesting it may have something to do with Windows Hello. I don't use that, and Windows Hello was greyed out on the laptop. I figured out how to edit the registry to make Windows Hello not be greyed out, but I still don't want to use it and haven't implemented it.

For grins, I then tried signing onto Amazon with Chrome ver. 135.0.7049.115. I got this after selecting passkey:

I guess this was progress. I selected phone or tablet. A QR code was displayed on the monitor to scan. I then opened 1P, and I got into my Amazon account. Success!

But what's the problem with Firefox and Windows Security? Firefox isn't successful whether or not Windows Hello is greyed out or not.

Thanks.

Hello @bobh123! 👋

Thanks for reaching out. The prompts that you're seeing are coming from Windows and not 1Password. As a start, make sure that 1Password is installed in Firefox itself: Download 1Password for Firefox

Next, make sure that 1Password is set as the default password manager in Firefox:

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
  3. Make sure that "Make 1Password the default password manager in this browser" is turned on.
  4. Click Autofill & save
  5. Make sure that "Offer to save and sign in with passkeys" is turned on.

Then, try to save a passkey for Amazon again: Save and sign in with passkeys in your browser

Let me know if you still see issues.

Dave,

Thanks for the ideas. I have, and had, the 1Password extension for Firefox. I couldn't find a specific 1Password for Firefox. I think you were referring to the extension. I opened the settings for the extension and they were as you suggest, but I turned them off and then back on. I just tried to sign on with the passkey, and this time it worked OK. So, for now, things seem to be working correctly. I'll get back to you if I still have problems in the future. Thanks.

I'm sorry for the late reply and I'm happy that things are working now. 🙂

Okay, so for anyone struggling with this like me and for who the suggestions above do not solve it (disabling and re-enabling the settings did nothing) I figured it out, at least in my case

On Windows 11 at least, there is apparently a prerequisite to be able to save Passkeys to 1Password through the browser. I suspect this is across all browser but definitely in Firefox (in my case, Firefox-based Floorp browser)

You need to have a Windows 11 PIN set in the settings menu (Settings → Accounts → Sing-in Options → PIN (Windows Hello) → Create PIN) because apparently Windows Hello is a requirement to save passkeys to 1Password browser extension. After I enabled this and it started working, I remembered I had some issue a while ago and had disabled that PIN

Then you need to go to Settings → Accounts → Passkeys → Advanced Options and make sure the switch “Passkey managers” next to 1Password is turned on and I have also enabled “Save passkeys to this device” though I’m not sure whether that’s a requirement

I also, just to be sure, then disabled and re-enabled the 1Password settings “General“ → “Make 1Password the default password manager in this browser” and I did the same for the setting “Autofill & Save” → “Offer to save passkeys”. Now, I’m not sure this last step is necesarry. I also tried this before I enabled the Windows Hello PIN but that did not work, the PIN and the other setting described above is the requirement

After all this, I FINALLY received the prompt to store passkeys in 1Password through the Firefox extension. I hope this helps someone else.

Perhaps the 1Password team could document this requirement somewhere or if that’s already done, make it more clear this is a requirement either by detecting and warning this setting is not turned on, or by mentioning it at the Passkey setting in the extension settings or something

Cheers!
