Hi,

I can't create a passkey on swissid.ch; 1Password doesn't activate and instead I am being redirected straight to Window Hello prompt.

1Password Version: Not Provided
Extension Version: 8.10.58.44
OS Version: Windows 11 24H2
Browser: Edge

Hello @nicos18 and @dooku! 👋

I'm sorry that you're unable to create a passkey on swissid.ch using 1Password. This is a known issue that our development team is currently working with SwissID to resolve and I've added your reports to our internal tracking item for the issue. Hopefully the issue can be resolved soon.

For the time being, you can use other authentication methods to sign into the website.

Very same issue. I tried several times and it fails. It’s quite odd that SwissID.ch does not accept 1password whereas the rest of the world does

I emailed SwissID with a link to this page and a bit of context: I don’t get that google, Microsoft, PayPal and many others companies accept to store the passkeys in 1password and not SwissID, it cannot be right.

For the sake of clarity, I also agree that this thread should not be marked as Closed, it’s surely not resolved

Pleasant surprise : I gave it a try today and it worked ! I was able to store my passkey in 1Password and then I could use it to log in again

Nice for you then - I only get the popup for Windows. I tried it and it is still status quo.

For anyone who's interested: First of all, I'm really happy to see that so many people in Switzerland use 1Password.

As for SwissID: it turns out they've really covered themselves with their audit processes. They're not stressed at all, because now all the password manager providers have to fill out these lovely forms and probably deal with a ton of follow-up questions before anything happens. I can totally imagine some IT guys in government just taking it slow and sticking strictly to their guidelines.

What would be far more interesting to know is where 1Password as a company actually stands in this process. It's kind of crazy that all we hear from them is "we're talking to SwissID". If the holdup is just with SwissID’s audit, then why not just say so publicly? That way, all the Swiss users would understand: okay, it’s the typical slow-moving bureaucracy, and we just have to wait it out.

@tygital

I'm not sure about what the process looks like on SwissID's end and I don't have any additional details to provide. I know that our team has been in contact with their team and we've been told that support for 1Password will be added to a future release of their service.

For more details, I recommend reaching out to SwissID.

For all swiss users: This is the reply from SwissID to my support ticket regarding 1Password.
I've tried it and finally a "passkey" gets stored in 1Password, but it still does not work. Everytime I want to login using the Chrome browser on Windows 11 it asks me to scan a new QR-Code for creating a passkey. And on the iPhone I get "Passkey is not available" (see picture below). Is 1Password FIDO2 complaint ??

"Guten Tag.

Hi team and community,

I’m a long-time 1Password customer in Switzerland and I’ve run into a roadblock with SwissID, our national digital identity. SwissID requires passkeys from FIDO2-certified providers. While 1Password can store passkeys, it isn’t recognized as a certified FIDO2 passkey provider, so SwissID rejects it.

SwissID states: “Only password managers that are FIDO2-compliant are supported. Many password managers can store passkeys but are not compliant themselves and are therefore not permitted by SwissSign for security and regulatory reasons.”

This matters because SwissID is widely used and backed by major Swiss institutions. It’s tied to Swiss Post and SBB, and it’s accepted by many services across e-government, healthcare, finance, media, and e-commerce. That means many of us in Switzerland can’t rely on 1Password passkeys for important, regulated logins.

Given 1Password’s membership in the FIDO Alliance and the global shift to passwordless authentication, FIDO2 certification as a passkey provider feels like the logical next step. It would let customers use 1Password for SwissID and other services that require certified passkey issuance, reducing the need to juggle multiple authenticators.

Is full FIDO2 certification as a passkey provider on the roadmap? If yes, is there any rough timeline you can share?

Thanks for considering this. 1Password is a tool I trust and want to keep using everywhere it counts.

Best regards,

@dslibby

Thanks for reaching out! 1Password is FIDO2-compliant and, as you mentioned, we're also a member of the FIDO Alliance: We’ve joined the FIDO Alliance to build a better future for authentication

Our team is currently in contact with the SwissID team and hopefully this issue will be fixed soon.

I'm also interested to know if and when it's solved. Thanks!

January 7, 2026

As it stands in 2026:

  • From Web Browser (Safari)
    • Not possible to create the passkey. 1Password extension is triggered but then "Something went wrong" on SwissId Website
  • On iOS (Safari)
    • Passkey creation in 1Password works
    • Passkey authentication works when logging in to SwissID

But, if I try to log in to SwissID on a Web Browser, when prompted to use the passkey I have created successfully on my phone, I am presented with these options only, not 1Password.

Why is this thread marked as solved? It's still not possible to store the passkey from SwissID.

Is there still an ongongi discussion between 1Password and the SwissID provider?
