Unlock in Safari --> "Open this page in 1Password?"

Sometimes when trying to unlock 1PW in iPad or iPhone Safari - by tapping the "Unlock 1Password" icon in a login screen's name, email, or password field - Safari opens up a new tab and puts up an alert asking "Open this page in 1Password?". If I hit "open" I get a 1PW password prompt; unlocking it then just brings up Safari tab with an empty page. The page with the login I'm trying to fill is in a different tab.

I can't figure out exactly what triggers this, but it happens a couple of times a week. It happens both on iPhone and iPad.

Has anyone else seen this, or know of a workaround?
iPadOS 18.3.1, 1PW 8.10.62

Thank you for the reply. That matches the same behaviour that I've seen on my devices and an issue has been filed with our development team to get this fixed in a future update to 1Password.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello @dmitch77! 👋

I'm sorry that you're seeing an unexpected prompt to open 1Password when using 1Password for Safari on your iPhone and iPad. I've done some testing and I've been able to reproduce the issue if I turn off Face ID and just use my account password to unlock both the main 1Password app and 1Password for Safari. I've filed an issue with our developers to have them investigate this further.

Are you using Touch ID or Face ID with 1Password on your iPhone and iPad? If you are then do you only see the issue when you're asked to unlock using your account password? Or do you also see the issue if you're asked to unlock using biometrics?

I look forward to hearing from you.

I see the failure with both types of authentication. My phone doesn't use Touch or FaceID and I just saw the error when I logged in to send this reply on this phone. I have TouchID on my iPad and I see the error there too, regularly.

1Password will sometimes require your password even if you have Touch ID enabled. For example:

  • If your fingerprint isn’t recognized five times in a row
  • If the amount of time in Settings > Security > “Confirm my account password” has elapsed
  • If you add or delete a fingerprint from your device

When you see the "Open this page in 1Password" prompt, are you able to unlock 1Password using Touch ID? Or is that a circumstance where you're asked to unlock using your account password?

In this case I can indeed unlock with Touch ID. The problem is, when I do that, Safari is showing a new empty tab. The field I unlocked 1PW for is on a different,  non-visible tab.
