Upgrade experience to 1Password 8 and 1Password.com from 1Password 7 and Dropbox
In general, I’m happy with 1Password 8 and 1Password.com; it’s faster and cleaner than my 1Password 7 on Dropbox experience. However, I’m generally disappointed with the migration experience. The most serious problem with the migration was that many (probably about two dozen out of about 700) Login items migrated without username and password. Since those are critical pieces of information, I ended up having to review each of my approximately 1,000 items to verify that they came across properly.
During said verification, I discovered a few other non-optimal aspects of the migration:
1) There were many (hundreds?) of items named “Missing Item” that, after review, I deleted. These existential phantoms seemed to be associated with previously deleted items in 1Password 7, but I can’t be sure of that.
2) File attachments were, in many cases, each given their own “section” upon migration. I ended up downloading them, deleting them from the item, and re-adding them in order to get them listed in a way which seems “correct” — near the end of the item and outside any specific section.
3) Item icons were missing from nearly all of the items. In most cases, upon “touching” the item during an edit, the icons were replaced properly. However it was disconcerting to see so many generic icons post-migration; it cast further uncertainty on the quality of the data post-migration and whether or not my 1Password 8 setup could be trusted to contain all the data I needed from my 1Password 7 setup.
I’ll keep learning the new 1Password 8 features, and I’m sure I’ll by happy with the new setup (especially since I can now dump my Dropbox subscription).
