Username generator

The username generator isn't available in app (Chrome extension, Desktop app in Windows). Is it still only available on the 1password website?!

1Password in the browser, and the 1Password apps, don't currently include a random username generator. However, as you noted, we do offer a username generator on our website: Random username generator

I've let our product team know that you'd like to see the username generator be added to the apps and browser extensions in the future. Thank you for the feedback!

@1P_Dave I would like to add my vote to include a username generator into the 1Password app.

A little over a year later, and that text is still on the website username generator. As a very longtime user of 1P, I was confident I’d be aware of this particular feature in the app, but nonetheless, when I read that line on the site—and thinking it makes so much sense to have the feature in there—I let my ego take the hit and went hunting for it in the app. When I failed to find it, I tried to figure it out from the documentation and then finally this forum. Only when I found this thread did my ego feel better.

You could nudge the team to finally fix the text on the site, which will probably take the assigned person less time to do than I spent unraveling my confusion about it, even if that person is an engineer doing a commit rather than a product person using a CMS. But even better would be to nudge the product team to make the text correct by adding a username generator in the app. As a starting point, that could mean attaching the password generator as an available command on the username field.

Historically, I’ve used the password generator to create usernames. But this is a little cumbersome, and depending on how you do it, leaves detritus behind. Now that more sites are finally starting to support real usernames instead of just email-as-username, it’d be nice to get proper support in 1P.

(If you’re curious, I don’t believe I’ve ever used the web generator. I’ve stumbled on it a couple of times over the years, but I don’t think about it when I’m focused on getting into a new site or app, besides the fact that having to involve a separate web-based tool further complicates the already often messy process of getting a new site/app set up in 1P.)
