Question

Way to add extra 'security'

Hello all,

I am wondering if there is a way to either create a vault that has an extra password protecting it or password protecting a specific item. The goal isn't to have it be secure from advanced hackers or the like, but mainly, there are some accounts that I don't really want people to see I have and I don't like that the second I open 1Password at work, someone can peer over my shoulder and see a list of all my accounts and usernames. I don't mind if that password is able to be reset via email. I just want one extra barrier.

I know I can create another vault but as far as I can tell, it is just as accessible as any other one so it does not really solve the problem.

Somewhat in the same vain: is there a way to have specific fields of different logins be "protected" like they show dots instead of the actual output like how passwords are? Sometimes my notes in each login are personal or like if I have another field like birthday, I don't want anyone to be able to see it. Again, goal isn't to protect from hackers but to stop accidental discovery.

If these features don't exist, lmk if there is a way to request them because I feel like a bunch of people would use it :).

Hi @JoeShmo232233,

I definitely feel and share your pain with the need for having "secure" vaults!

It's been too long ago to remember exactly how it worked, but when I switched from LastPass, this is one of the features I really, really missed and wished 1Password also had the same functionality.

The only thing I have been able to do in 1Password as a "workaround" is to create separate vaults with inconspicuous names.  Clicking on them is still going to reveal the entries but it's better than nothing and at least it requires a click.

I so totally agree with you:  It's not about stopping a hacker; rather, it's about adding an extra layer of protection to avoid nearby wandering eyes from seeing your vault data.  We deliberately want to go through that extra step to unlock the vault and reveal its contents.

As for the fields, I also agree and it should be implemented as simple as a toggle (e.g., a checkbox to indicate show or conceal).

I'm glad you made this post and hopefully it gets some attention and traction!

Completely agree. I think 1Pass might be literally perfect except for this. It seems so simple. the only work around I can think of is get a family plan but it would be super inconvenient to have to completely sign out all the time. But yeah, I'll try inconspicuous names if there isn't another option.

Hello! 👋

Thanks so much for taking the time to share this and I’m sorry for the frustration you’re running into here. I completely understand the desire for a bit of extra privacy, especially in situations like working in a shared space where someone might glance at your screen.

At the moment, there isn’t a way to add an additional password to a specific vault or to individual items inside your account. Once you unlock 1Password, your data is decrypted and available to the app. Adding a second password to a vault or item inside an already unlocked account wouldn’t create a true new security boundary, it would essentially be an additional prompt within an app that already has access to your data.

Similarly, there isn’t currently a way to selectively mask custom fields or notes so they remain hidden after unlocking (like passwords are by default). When your account is unlocked, the item contents are accessible within the app.

That said, your use case makes a lot of sense and I can certainly pass along your feedback to our Product team so that they can look into the desire for more granular privacy within an unlocked session.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your feedback.
