Why can I not use 1Password on iOS to approve family requests?

I am using an iPhone 11 running iOS 17.6.1. I use 1Password to store and generate passwords and it works very well and integrates well with Apple.

However when I receive a request for an app from one of my children via Family sharing, I get this screen . Here there is NO opportunity to open or access 1Password. So what am I supposed to do?

Is there a way to ensure 1Password is always available?

Great question! Within iOS, 1Password relies on an Apple technology known as iOS Password AutoFill for filling and AutoFill doesn't allow us to fill into certain system prompts that prompt for your Apple ID.

If you don't see the "Passwords" prompt appear above your keyboard when you tap on the password field in the prompt in your screenshot then this isn't something that 1Password can change and is an issue common to all password managers on iOS.

You can copy and paste your password from the 1Password app on your iOS device into the AppleID prompt: Copy and fill passwords into apps that don't work with 1Password

Hopefully the situation is improved in future versions of iOS. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey @JohnMaplewood , I ran into the same issue with approving family requests on iOS. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t allow third-party password managers like 1Password to integrate directly with the Family Sharing approval process. The approval screen is a system-level prompt controlled by iOS, so there’s no option to use 1Password for these requests.

What I do is keep my Apple ID password saved in 1Password, then quickly copy it from the 1Password app and paste it into the approval screen when needed. It’s not ideal, but it’s a decent workaround for now. Hopefully, Apple will add more flexibility for password managers in the future.
