Question

Win11: "Something went wrong" passkey

Anytime Windows gets invoked for a passkey (typically by Discord), it fails.

1Password for Windows 8.12.26 (81226040)

Version     : 10.0.26200
BuildNumber : 26200

I have this issue on multiple Windows systems. There must be some incompatibility or setting I need, but using 1password passkeys just doesn’t work when Windows Security intercepts the request. 90% of the time, the in-browser plugin handles it, but the 10% of times it spills into Windows, its 100% failure.

Hi @b3nw thanks for reaching out!

The link the @DenalB shared has some good suggestions of settings to check, particularly ensuring that 1Password is turned on as a passkey manager in your Windows settings. You can find the steps to check that and some other helpful info on using passkeys on Windows devices in our support article: Save and sign in with passkeys on Windows | 1Password Support

You also mentioned the following:

90% of the time, the in-browser plugin handles it, but the 10% of times it spills into Windows, its 100% failure.

Just to confirm, is the issue happening only on certain sites you visit, or is it happening randomly across all sites where you sign in with passkeys?

Let me know if you have any questions.

Basically the way it works is, normally I get a prompt like this in the browser:

This works 100% when this shows up.

For certain sites (or apps in Chrome windows), like Discord (100% of the time), or if I X the above and proceed to login, the next time passkey prompt appears, I get this:

And this is always 100% failure afterwards, no matter what route I take. Occasionally I can get it to let me show a QR code and auth via phone, but no idea when/why that occurs.

The only thing I can say for sure is, this 100% fails on sites where I have more than 1 account with a passkey. When it is only a single account, it seems to work just fine no matter what route I take (outside of the in-browser popup).

I only realized this difference while getting screenshots for the above, so repro is, get 2+ accounts on a website with passkeys, login, decline the initial in-browser popup, use the win11 popup, get failure.,
