Windows 11 app won't open

I've been a long user of 1password and love it. However, suddenly, the Windows 11 app won't open. The browser extensions for Firefox and Edge work properly, but if I try to launch Windows 11 from the start menu or by right clicking "open" in the task bar icon, nothing happens. I've tried to correct this by deleting the app and re-installing it--no luck. And I've turned of hardware acceleration from the mini-app. Please help!

I'm glad that this is not a constant issue. Support sent to me via email to do the following and so far, it has been stable:


  • Right click on 1Pass in the system try and open Settings (or get there through the app)
  • Click Advanced
  • UNCHECK - Use Hardware Acceleration

So far, so good... :D

I have been having this issue off and on for the last couple days. Rather annoying.

How I resolved the issue is to open Task Manager and search for '1pass" and then killing all tasks (especially the background task) and then it should start correctly.

My wife and I have been getting Crashes on PC Startup and sending reports in but does not seem to be getting better.

We are both on Windows 11.

Same problem for me. More on than off for at least the past week. I usually end up having to open 1Password on my iPhone to look up the password and type the password in manually. It's really a pain. 

I'm also on Windows 11.

I'm sorry that the 1Password desktop app isn't opening on your Windows PC. Our developers are currently investigating an issue where the app might not open in certain cases. Can you let me know if one of the following workarounds helps the 1Password app to open on your Windows PC:

  • Toggle the option to automatically hide the Windows taskbar (right click on the taskbar > Taskbar settings).
  • Open Quick Access by right-clicking the system tray icon (or using the keyboard shortcut).
    • Unlock 1Password.
    • Lock 1Password by right-clicking the system tray icon.

I'm sorry that the 1Password desktop app isn't opening on your Windows PC. Our developers are currently investigating an issue where the app might not open in certain cases. Can you let me know if one of the following workarounds helps the 1Password app to open:

Sorry it took a while to get back to you on this. I have a couple issues with this workaround that you are suggesting.

  1. This is not a consistent issue. I can go weeks without any issues with the application and then suddenly, I boot up my PC and am presented with a window stating 1Password has stopped working and to either ignore or send in a report. I always choose sending in a report.
  2. Hiding the taskbar as a workaround step? Can I get an explanation of what this is supposed to accomplish? For the life of me I cannot think of how this would impact the way the application works.
  3. Unlocking and locking via the system tray icon works fine, but since this is not a consistent issue, I am lost as to what this will accomplish as well.

 

Question I would like to pose to you is:

  • Are there any log files we can look at and send over?
  • I have not found any entries in the Windows Event Logs that help, so where else can we look to get more information?
  • Is there any information that I can provide that the crash reports don't send that would help with this investigation?

 

One of the issues I see here is that with this being an intermittent issue, your developers are going to have a rough time to investigate this unless there is a way for us to send information in when the issue occurs. Since, for me, it has been a few days since the issue came up, I'm pretty sure the logs have rotated and the issue may not be logged anymore, so having something that I can do when it occurs would help.

Thank you for those details. I understand that the issue is intermittent, our developers are investigating similar reports and the workarounds that I listed helped other users. If they also worked for you then it would confirm that you're seeing the same issue that we're already investigating. 

So that we can investigate further, I'd like to ask you to create a diagnostics report from your Windows PC:

Send a diagnostics report (Windows)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com
