Windows Hello opens in background and doesn't function correctly

The last 3 days windows hello (in use with 1 password) doesn't accept input.  And somehow caps lock is on even though the keyboard doesn't show it on.  I saw that this was an issue a year ago, but it just occurred again with my system.  I am on Win 11, with the latest updates, no VPN, using Chrome with the browser extension.

I then get repeated requested to enter my full 1Password credentials.  However after an hour, the timeout for 1Password, the same problem occurs.

I have tried un enabling and then re enabling 1Password, to no effect.   I also rebooted and then ran a full Microsoft Virus scan, but nothing was found.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your patience. Our development team has released a fix for the issue in the latest update to 1Password for Windows (8.12.1):

We’ve fixed an issue where Windows Hello prompts could appear behind app and browser windows.

Please update to the latest version of 1Password for Windows: How to keep 1Password up to date

If you're still seeing issues with Windows Hello appearing behind other apps/windows after updating then please let me know by replying to this post.

god this is frustrating issue..

So, I'm trying disabling using windows hello to unlock 1password and so far so good.

if you want to give it a shot: do the opposite of the setting it in the following instructions:

Well, here is another person who can tack on the same issue.  I have had issues since Microsoft had their problem with Logitec back in OCT 2025.  But this started happening about a week ago and yes holding the SHIFT works for mine, and it appears only on Windows Hello and for now, just 1PW trying to fill in a credential.

Here is a ticket/question I have with MS, may not matter, but I posted it there too.

@1P_SimonH Can someone at 1Password confirm this is being looked into?  It's a pretty major headache, and roadblock for anyone who doesn't know how to get around it!

Just a quick update: The issue has been resolved for me.

It turns out the solution was the Microsoft out-of-band update KB5077744. After installing this update, the keyboard works correctly in Windows Hello and 1Password again.

Please note: As of now, this update is not available via standard Windows Update. You have to download it manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Hi, this had suddenly started happening to me as well.

January 19, 2026

So I think Microsoft broke something with some recent update. I ran following commands in an elevated command prompt (command prompt ran as admin)

sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

And after that I have restarted my PC, and it appears to be working correctly again.

Same issue. Hitting left shift also fixes it for me.

Hello folks,

Our development team is currently aware of an issue where Window Hello input is disrupted when unlocking 1Password after a recent Windows update. We're currently testing a fix in the beta version of 1Password for Windows (8.12.0) which you can find here: Use 1Password beta or nightly releases

If you'd like to stick with the production version of 1Password then the following can help workaround the issue when it occurs:

  • Press the Shift key once, this should clear the stuck state.
  • Fully close the 1Password app and then re-open it. Unlock the 1Password desktop app first, then use 1Password in the browser (rather than unlocking 1Password in the browser first).

I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused, we're working on releasing the fix as soon as possible.

Hey @1P_Dave, @Charleyrich,

I am not convinced that this is a 1Password issue.

I installed (and uninstalled) the January update twice because of this issue and, in my case, I noticed the issue in my File Manager when I was clicking on files.

After the second re-installation of the January update, when the issue re-occurred, I opened a Command Prompt window to test the keyboard and everything I typed was in caps, even though, of course, Caps Lock was off.

That was the last straw, so after I restored again, I paused updates for a month, in anticipation that the issue will be resolved with the February update.  I know they just issued an out-of-band emergency update, but I didn't see anything in the descriptions that refer to this issue, so I am still waiting for the February update.

Just installed the latest update and the issue is resolved, Thank You All

@1P_Dave How is this resolved when the issue still occurs.  Regardless of the team investigating and a possible work around, it is still an issue.
