Team members often have questions during a 1Password Enterprise Password Manager rollout. Share these answers to help them understand 1Password’s benefits, get started, and incorporate it into their daily workflows.
What is 1Password?
1Password Enterprise Password Manager lets you save and fill passwords, passkeys, shared logins, and other sensitive information. Instead of keeping passwords in spreadsheets, email, or notes, use 1Password to create strong, unique passwords and fill them automatically when you sign in.
You can also use 1Password to store:
- Credit cards
- Addresses
- Secure notes
- SSH keys
- API credentials
- Passkeys
- Software license keys
- And more
You can share items securely without sending them through email or chat, and only the people you share them with can see them.
Watchtower alerts you to weak, reused, or compromised passwords and helps keep you from entering credentials on the wrong website.
What is a vault?
A vault works like a folder on your computer, but for sensitive information such as passwords, API keys, and credit cards. 1Password encrypts everything inside it.
Your account owner or administrator might create and share vaults based on your role, department, or projects. Save private work items, such as your email password, in your Employee Vault so other team members can’t access them.
How do I get started?
- Download the 1Password desktop app and browser extension if your employer hasn’t already installed them on your devices.
- Accept the invitation to your company’s 1Password account.
- Follow the instructions to set up your account with an account password and Secret Key, or Unlock with SSO.
- Sign in to the 1Password apps.
- Sign in to 1Password on your additional devices.
Can I save multiple passwords in 1Password?
You can save as many passwords as you need in 1Password Enterprise Password Manager. You can also save, fill, and securely share credit cards, addresses, software license keys, and other types of information.
Can I use 1Password as an authenticator for other websites?
You can use 1Password Enterprise Password Manager instead of Google Authenticator or another standalone authenticator app. Read how to set up and use 1Password as an authenticator for websites that support two-factor authentication.
How do I add custom fields to my items?
You can add custom fields to Logins, Credit Cards, Secure Notes, and other items whenever you need to store additional information securely.
To add a custom field in the 1Password desktop app or on 1Password.com:
- Open and unlock 1Password, or sign in to your account on 1Password.com.
- Select an item and choose Edit.
- Select Add More, then choose a field type.
- Select the field and enter its details. You can also change the field name.
- Select Save.
What is Watchtower?
Watchtower alerts you to breaches, weak passwords, duplicate items, and other security issues involving the items you’ve saved in 1Password Enterprise Password Manager. Open Watchtower from the sidebar in the 1Password desktop app.

How do I adjust my auto-lock settings?
You can configure 1Password to lock automatically after a set period of inactivity. Owners, Administrators, and members of groups with the Manage Settings permission can also use a policy to enforce when the 1Password browser extension and apps lock on team members’ devices.
I’m locked out. How can I regain access to my 1Password account?
Try these steps if you’ve forgotten your 1Password account details:
- Retrieve your Emergency Kit, which contains your account password, Secret Key, and other sign-in details.
- If you’ve lost or don’t have your Emergency Kit, check your other devices to see whether you’re already signed in to 1Password and have biometric unlock enabled.
- Contact a 1Password account owner or administrator to begin recovering your account.
If you don’t use Unlock with SSO, your account password and Secret Key will change after account recovery. You’ll need to sign in again on your devices.
If you use Unlock with SSO, you’ll need to relink your connected devices after account recovery.
Can I use 1Password outside of work?
If your organization uses 1Password Business, you can redeem a complimentary 1Password Families membership for yourself and up to four other people. With 1Password Families, each person gets a private vault, and you can use shared vaults to manage information with your family.
You can add your personal and work 1Password accounts to the same desktop app and browser extension, then use items from one without signing out of the other. The two accounts stay separate, and your organization can’t see or access anything in your personal account. To keep it that way, check which account a new item is going into when you save it: work information belongs in your work account, while personal information belongs in your 1Password Families account.
If you leave your organization, add payment information to keep your Families membership active, or export your data. Read what happens to your Families membership when you leave.
