Structure your 1Password deployment around your organization

A successful 1Password deployment starts with a clear view of your organization and its technology. Use this page to document both before you begin.

Identify your organization’s structure

Set up 1Password to mirror how your organization works. Start by documenting your organization’s structure with these questions:

  • What teams and business units exist in your organization? You can mirror this structure in 1Password.
  • Is your organizational structure already represented in your identity provider (IdP)? Many IdPs double as company directories. If yours does, you can use automated provisioning to bring the same structure into 1Password.

Some organizations operate through semi-autonomous divisions, split by region, function, or another structure. If yours does, you can set up a multi-tenant account: a parent account that manages separate child accounts, each with its own team members and vaults.

Learn how to set up a 1Password multi-tenant account and manage child accounts from it.

Identify your tech stack

To prepare for your 1Password launch, make a short list of the main tools your organization uses. Start with two questions:

  • What operating systems do your team members use? For example, Windows, MacOS, or Linux.
  • What software deployment tools do you use? For example, Microsoft Intune or Jamf.

Two 1Password integrations, Unlock with SSO and automated provisioning, have their own requirements:

  • For Unlock with SSO, you'll need an SSO provider (this is often also an IdP).
  • For automated user provisioning, you'll need an IdP (your SSO provider and IdP are often the same service, but some organizations use separate ones).
The next chapter covers automated provisioning and Unlock with SSO in more detail, and shows how they make deployment and sign-in simpler for your team.
