Multiple 1Password-BrowserSupport Processes When Using an Unsupported Browser

Hi 1Password team,

I've come across several existing community reports describing zombie 1Password-BrowserSupport processes when using an unsupported browser. I also confirmed that adding the browser to the Trusted Browsers list works around the issue.

However, I don't think this completely addresses the underlying problem.

Whether a browser is trusted or unsupported, leaving zombie processes behind after the browser exits is undesirable and can negatively impact the overall stability and resource usage of the operating system. While adding the browser to the trusted list avoids the issue, it seems more like a workaround than a fix.

From my perspective, the 1Password-BrowserSupport process should terminate cleanly regardless of whether the browser is recognized as trusted.

Is this behavior already being tracked internally? If not, I'd like to report it as a bug. I'd really appreciate it if the underlying issue could be investigated and resolved rather than relying solely on the trusted browser workaround.

Thank you!

Hello @Miyoung Shin! 👋

I’m sorry that you’re seeing orphaned BrowserSupport processes when using an unsupported browser with 1Password on your Windows PC. I can confirm that this is a known issue that our development team is actively looking into.

As a workaround for now, until a fix is released, there are two different options available to prevent the BrowserSupport processes from accumulating:

  • Turn off app integration in the browser: 1Password > Settings >  turn off “Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app”.
  • Remove and then re-add the unsupported browser as an additional browser in the 1Password desktop app: Connect additional browsers to the 1Password app

1password periodically spawns hundreds, sometimes up to 1k+ processes. This has been ongoing for a while now. Anyone else running into this issue? During the lag spikes my mouse takes 5 seconds to reach the other side of the screen.

@Hyudryu

I’m sorry that you’re seeing multiple BrowserSupport processes from 1Password. What browsers are you using on your Windows PC? If you’re using an unsupported browser then please take a look at my pinned reply here.

@1P_Dave I’ve uninstalled it from Opera, and now the only browser with 1password installed is Chrome. It's still spawning tons of processes and lagging the entire computer with CPU usage stuck at 100%. Can’t even move the mouse, and keystrokes take 5-10 seconds to register
