1Password app and Safari Extension slow

Have anybody noted that 1Password app and Safari extension are working incredibly slow since Mac OS update to 15.4.1?

  • Thanks for flagging these issues, everyone, and I'm sorry you're seeing performance problems.

For the Safari extension, we're currently waiting on an updated version of Safari from our friends at Apple that will fix some bugs that are affecting the 1Password extension.

For the 1Password Mac app, we're investigating what's causing this for some folks and not others. I'd encourage you to follow along in this thread, as it has information about how you can submit your logs and help us get to the bottom of this.

I'm sorry we don't have an immediate solution, but know that we're doing everything in our power to improve the Safari experience and solve the Mac slowness.

I'm having the same issue, the 1Password app is slow to load. I started to notice it about a week or more ago. I use Chrome day to day, and the extension there is good. When opening the app, I get the spinning gear (attached) under where the Categories should be. After a several seconds (5+) it will display the categories.

Using the search bar in 1Password app is equally as slow. It'll take 5 to 10 seconds to show results, where as before this, it was almost instantaneous for both opening and searching.

    Running macOS 15.5, 1Password for Mac 8.10.78 (81078043)

Ticket submitted to support with diagnostic report.

Safari + 1password has been unusable for a while.
    Where is the actual problem?

  • Hello bapfoto, ginkgobiloba, and iwaddo! 👋

I'm sorry that you're seeing performance issues when using 1Password. As a first step, make sure that you're using the latest versions of 1Password for Safari, 1Password for Mac, and macOS:

If you still see the same issue after updating, or are already running the latest versions, then can you tell me the following:

    1. Where specifically do you see the slowness? When opening 1Password? When filling a login in Safari?
    2. Do you see any error messages? Or is performance just slower on your Mac?

I look forward to hearing from you.

    -Dave

It is very difficult to describe. Clunky comes to mind, so does inconsistent, definitely very frustrating.

The slowness is hard to pin down. I mostly use Universal Autofill, it's a shortcut I've got used to and sometimes nothing happens for several seconds before it fills.

      I'm running

      • 1Password for Mac 8.10.78 (81078039) on BETA channel
      • 1Password for Safari 8.10.76.34
      • Safari 18.5 (20621.2.5.11.8)
      • macOS Sequoia 15.5 (24F74)

I'm sat with 1Password open yet the browser extension has a padlock which says 'Open 1Password' when clicked. It does nothing when clicked..

      This button often does nothing

What is this screen all about? This appeared after I'd already logged into this forum, why? It often appears so does a prompt to save passwords which are already in 1Password. My Dad has created so many duplicates!!

The vault often reverts back to the default rather than the one I’ve chosen.

In full transparency I'm exploring alternatives but the thought of moving my family, including my 80+ year-old Dad has me feeling trapped.

The inconsistency makes it very difficult to log anything but I'll help if I can.

      Thank you for your help.

Thanks for the reply. You said:

How are you filling your logins? Are you pressing Command-Backslash to fill your login? Or are you selecting the login from the suggestions menu in the browser:

Can you also double-check that the integration with the desktop app is turned on:

        1. Open your browser.
        2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
        3.  Make sure that "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app" is on and that you see a green connected circle.

  • Agreed, the extension usability has gone steadily downhill which is frustrating because you have to rely on it to use passkeys.

I think it has been getting slower and slower for a while. I'm running 15.5 and it is still noticeably slow, it feels like you can see it thinking.

Logging into this forum this morning on my Mac, command-\ was so slow that I thought it wasn’t going to work - it was a good 3 or 4 seconds. Painful
