1Password Not Running in Background on Mac

This issue is causing considerable inconvenience, as I'm required to repeatedly enter my password whenever I wish to use the autofill feature.

Here are the specifics of the problem:

  • Device: Mac running the latest version 13.5.1
  • 1Password Version: 1Password 8.10.9

Despite my best efforts to troubleshoot, the issue persists. I've taken the following actions to address the problem:

  1. Enabled 'All in the Background for 1Password' in the Mac settings.
  2. Turned off the Auto-Lock feature in the 1Password settings.
  3. Set the 'Lock after the computer is idle for: Never' in the 1Password settings.
  4. Uninstalled and reinstalled the 1Password application.

However, despite these adjustments, the 1Password application continues to immediately close upon exiting. This forces me to re-enter my password each time I wish to utilize it, particularly in Safari and other applications.

Given the steps I've taken and the persistence of the issue, it seems probable that a software bug is the root cause. I kindly request your team's immediate attention to investigate and rectify this issue as it's considerably affecting my ability to use the 1Password application efficiently.

Please fix this bug ASAP.

My colleagues on Twitter may be referring to a different issue, I don't have access to your conversation there. I do see that you posted in a different thread and I've merged your comments together into one thread so that we can keep the conversation in the same place.

The behaviour that we're discussing in this thread, where 1Password is closing and locking after you close the main window and the menu bar icon is turned off isn't considered a bug by our development team since 1Password is functioning as intended and as designed. I've filed a feature request on your behalf to have the team look into changing this behaviour in the future.

Even if just for the safari extension, when I turn off the ‘Integrate with 1Password app’ and set the Automatically lock 1Password’ off. Which should separate the 1Password App and the 1Password extension. The 1Password still keep asking me to enter password.

Are you being asked for your password when filling a login into a website? Or when clicking on the 1Password icon in Safari's toolbar?

1Password will always lock when you quit your browser. Is it possible that you closed Safari at some point before you're asked for your account password?

I look forward to hearing from you.

This is what the Twitter support told me, they are aware about this issue! But have not fixed it yet.

I don’t know if you and Twitter support work together but they told me they are aware about this issue and trying to fix it.

When I turn off the ‘Integrate with 1Password app’ and set the Automatically lock 1Password’ off on the Safari extension. The 1Password still keep asking me to enter password after couple minutes.

My device is M2 MacBook Pro.

I don’t think this is a future request, I would consider this is a ‘Bug Report’!

I have turned the ‘Keep 1Password in the menu bar‘ off all time and I have no problem with it, suddenly today, it doesn’t work anymore.

Even if just for the safari extension, when I turn off the ‘Integrate with 1Password app’ and set the Automatically lock 1Password’ off. Which should separate the 1Password App and the 1Password extension. The 1Password still keep asking me to enter password.

Thank you for the reply. If "Keep 1Password in the menu bar" is turned off, and you close 1Password's main window, then all of 1Password's processes will close.

If you'd like 1Password to stay running, and unlocked, in the background then you'll need to turn the menu bar icon on. I can file a feature request on your behalf to have the team look into separating seeing 1Password in menu bar from keeping 1Password running when all windows are closed if you wish. Let me know. 🙂

I would like to keep the ‘Keep 1Password in the menu bar‘ off since I have already allowed 1Password to run in the background. I close the main window, that’s it.

  • Hello @Zitan! 👋

I'm sorry that you're running into an issue where 1Password is closing between uses. As a first step can you check the following:

    1. Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
    2. Click on 1Password next to the  in the menu bar.
    3. Click on Settings.
    4. Click on General.
    5. Make sure that "Keep 1Password in the menu bar" is turned on.

If that doesn't resolve the issue then can you tell me how you're "exiting" 1Password? Are you closing the main window? From the Dock? Or from the menu bar icon?
