Add 1Password extension for Opera & Sidekick browsers

I wish to add my voice to the many requesting native browser extensions for Opera & Sidekick.

I've added Opera & Sidekick as trusted browsers using 1Password Support's process described here.

https://my.1password.com/app#/everything/Search/55l4252gttwaodsvgvzin7oicu5q63bj4czfgwhl5ipfdykpxea4/edit?itemListId=agile

I can open Opera & Sidekick from the Chromium Extensions in the toolbar. However, it does not open the Desktop 1Password. The same is true if I open Desktop 1Password first and then go to Opera or Sidekick.

Apple Watch does not work with either, nor does TouchID. I have to type in my password, which for me raises a security concern.

I don't understand why 1Password provides a native chromium extension in Brave and not Opera or Sidekick, both of which have 3rd party integration and tab features that are superior to Brave.

I would also appreciate if 1Password would state why they don't support these browsers.
Technical issues?
Legal questions?
I suspect the latter and if that is the case I respect that, but would like to know.

1Password user since 2009.

Thank you for reaching out. The team used to have to extensively vet different browsers and add support manually but we now have a feature that allows users to choose their own trusted browsers. You can add a custom trusted browser to 1Password for Mac by following these steps:

    1. Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
    2. Click on 1Password next to the  in the menu bar.
    3. Click Settings.
    4. Click Browser.
    5. Click Add Browser and follow the prompts to add your chosen browser.

Our team is working on releasing a similar feature for Windows in the future.

  • Thanks for 1Password! However, the constant need to enter my password when using the Opera browser is frustrating. I would like to use both Opera and 1Password on Windows 11. Could you please let me know when the issue with the connection (desktop app and Opera extension) will be fixed? This problem has been going on for far too long. Thank you.

The 1Password for Windows desktop app can only connect to certain trusted browsers, such as Chrome and Firefox, that have been through a vetting and approval process. Opera isn’t one of these browsers, so it won’t be able to connect to the desktop app. This isn’t a bug but a security measure designed to make sure that only verified browsers can access your 1Password data. As a result, you’ll need to unlock 1Password in Opera separately each time you restart your browser, and features like biometric unlock won’t be available.

On Mac, the team has introduced a feature that lets you add your own trusted browsers (even if we don't support them officially) as long as they have a valid code signature. This option isn’t available on Windows yet, but it's something that our team is working on building and releasing.

Why is this still not implemented in Windows? I do not like my password manager dictating what chromium based browser I can use!

1P_Daveis this only an option for Mac? I'm using windows 11, latest updates on everything and I don't have this option.

I recently switched to Opera GX from Chrome, but don't see this as an option. Only issue I seem to have is that I downloaded from chrome webstore (I know not officially supported by this browser), but then the Integration status shows Connection Problem.

Thanks for the ping. Currently, the feature to add unsupported browsers (like Opera) to the 1Password desktop app is only available for the Mac. I'll let the team know that you'd like to see it be developed and released for Windows as well.

For the time being, you can use 1Password in Opera but you'll need to unlock it separately from the desktop app using your account password.
