Autofill not working Safari Mac Sequoia 15.5

For quite a time now, autofill is not working on MacOS 15.x. Ocassionally, it will populate after finagling but the majority of the time it does not. Quite a frustrating problem considering the amount of time spent on this. Not sure if it's a Mac problem - they seem to not care much about Mac OS anymore (more interested in iOS). Apparently my time is not important to Apple and not sure I want to drag on with them. Husband says autofill is working just fine on his windows machines. I may give up Mac OS completely for Windows or Linux.

  • Hello Ldt and Baz! 👋

I'm sorry that 1Password stops working in Safari on your Macs. It sounds like you're running into a known issue where 1Password's suggestion menu will stop working, and Autofill will stop filling in Safari.

So that I can confirm whether you're running into the issue, the next time that it occurs, does opening the same website in a new tab get things working again? If it doesn't then does restarting Safari always resolve the issue?

      Hi Dave,

Just happened to me and I tested as you asked. I tried to log in to outlook.com. This causes a number of security related redirects. The user id field is entered on its own page. After that another page prompts for the password.

When asked to enter my user id, 1Password autofill failed. I then opened a new tab. In the new tab, 1Password functioned properly on the user id page. 1Password failed on password page. I repeated that test with the same results. I restarted my browser and everything worked.

The last time this failed for me was on atlassian.com. They also prompt for the user id on a separate page from the password.

Thank you for providing those details. It sounds like you're running into a known issue in Safari 18.4 and later that our team is working with our friends at Apple to resolve. For the time being, opening the website in a new tab, or if that doesn't work then restarting Safari, should get things working again.

Alternatively, you can fill your login credentials using Universal Autofill if 1Password for Safari stops working: Use Universal Autofill in apps and browsers on your Mac

I've been having a lot of problem with the browser extension for Safari for a bit of time now (maybe weeks). The problem is usually resolved if I restart Safari. I'm not willing to point a finger, though.

Just today I was struggling trying to log in to atlassian.com. The extension (triggered from the toolbar) would not populate the email field. Also, the in-field drop down would not operate. Refreshing the page did not solve it. Restarting Safari did solve it.

Quite often the 1Password extension icon in the toolbar hesitates to open. Once that happens, I know that the extension will not autofill, even though it displays the details of the site. Sometimes one window won't work, but another Safari window behaves just fine with respect to autofill.

The real answer is probably for me to file a bug report and participate in diagnosing the problem. I haven't worked up the energy to do that.
