Bitwarden-like "FIll and Save"

Currently, on iOS, if I choose to auto-fill an entry that does not have a website association at all - 1Password will:

  • Auto fill selected entry
  • Save associated website as the website for that entry

Next time I visit that website on any device, the auto-fill popup shows up - it's all well and good.

On desktop (MacOS at least), it's a different scenario. On firefox, when I visit a website that I have credentials for but do not have the website associated with the credentials, I have two options:

  • Copy and paste credentials - from web extension or desktop app
  • Universal Auto-fill the credentials - from desktop app

The latter does not always work - at least that's the case for https://account.riseup.net.

The former, while it works, does not automatically associate the website with the set of credentials. Association has to be done manually.

This is in stark contrast to Bitwarden which I am moving from (and I love 1Password so far) where you can click on any entry on the web extension and you get this dropdown:

Once you click this, the credentials are auto-filled and the website is associated with the entry for use in the future. This is super convenient.

I think a feature like this should be very welcome by the 1Password community as it would not only make the web extension at feature parity with the mobile auto-fill experience but also build on top of the several (I must say, really several) quality-of-life things that 1Password gets right, that not even Strongbox or Bitwarden do.

Thank you!

Hi kayg, thanks for joining the Community! It's great to hear you're loving 1Password.

I hear what you're saying, and I can definitely see the benefit in an option to fill and update login items similar to what's available with the mobile 1Password apps. I believe we received the same request from you on Twitter, so I haven't duplicated the request submission but I can confirm it has been filed with the team for review (if that's wrong, let me know and I can update!).

It's a bit more of a manual process, but this is what I would recommend with the existing setup: when you reach a site where you have a login but it's not connected via URL, search for the item in the extension or in the 1Password app. Then, select Edit for the item and paste the page's URL into the website field before saving.

Let us know if you have any questions, and thanks again!

Hey, thanks for filing this for review. Yes, it was me on twitter again.

I already do the manual process for now - substituting it with universal auto-fill wherever it works with Zen Browser (another feature request to add Zen Browser to list of officially supported browsers - I already asked for it via support 😅). But thank you for laying out the steps!

No problem waiting for the feature to be implemented.
