What don't you like about Electron?
It's basically raccoons in a trenchcoat.
Sure, but what specifically don't you like about it?
The raccoons doen't look or act like people.
Right, but in what exact ways don't they look or act like people?
They live in a dumpster and can't talk.
OK, fair enough. But they're cute, right? What words don't they know?
It's not just context menus. Pull-down menus near the right side of a window always open <-- left because they're scared of the window border.
And in
Preferences
, menus don't open with the active option selected.
Zoom weirdness:
Preferences
->Appearance
IncreaseInterface Zoom
from 100% to 200%.(The Preferences window explodes to uselessness.)
Close
Preferences
OpenPreferences
again(It's back to normal size, ignoring any desired Zoom level.)

The addition of the new "Appearance" preferences definitely helps (Compact/90%) to make it less cartoonish
As someone with old eyes, I'm very glad we decided to offer options here. I've got my zoom set to 125% and density set to comfortable. π To some it may look cartoonish, but I appreciate not having to squint. π

I've pretty much given up all hope of AgileBits deciding to go back on their decision to have their own custom cross-platform design language that doesn't fit in anywhere, rather than use the already existing and established design languages of the host operating system. I'm just tolerating the look and feel of the app now, rather than enjoying it - although the fact 1PW is fast helps a little.
any specifics you'd like to share
I'm sure all of these have been noticed before months ago, but they're still evident, so, here goes:
- Non standard font. Instantly the app sticks out because it doesn't use the OS standard font (San Francisco on Mac)
- No rubber-banding in scrolling lists. Another standard macOS feature.
- The standard macOS highlights and accent colour set in the system Appearance preferences are not honoured.
- Non standard menus, buttons and other UI elements.
- Inconsistent right-click (contextual menus). Some are custom with icons and are truncated by the app window edges. Some are macOS style (even with the macOS font) but without icons and do extend beyond the window edges.
Over the months, I have seen improvements in some areas however:
- Scrolling is no longer janky, and the redraw now keeps up with the fastest scrolling speed (even on my 2012 Mac mini).
- The preferences window is now a proper floating window with the correct macOS style close button appearance and position, although the New Item window is still an old Electron style UI-blocking, mon-movable modal, with X to close top-right.

@TranceMist I totally agree with your review of 1Password v8!
This should be nr 1 priority: "You should have focused on putting all of the core functionality form v7 into v8 before adding new features."
Been a 1Password paid customer since v4, liked the fast integration of touch id, face id, Apple watch, secure password sharing but the look and feel of 1P v8 using Electron, new search function doesnt feel good...

Thanks for the feedback, @TranceMist, and your long-time support for our efforts here. I'm sorry to learn that this has been your experience.
It's hard to respond to criticisms of Electron, broadly writ. Likewise, we fully respect if you feel the app doesn't "feel" right to you, but - in order to make the best app possible - what can we do to improve? Is it just that it's Electron, and you'd prefer it wasn't? If so, that's OK, we've heard it before and that counts as feedback too. Or is there something specific about the visual and tactile experience that you feel doesn't come up to the standard we should meet?
Throughout the Early Access period, we've taken on board suggestions (and criticisms, often passionate ones) about how to make the app more performant, more attractive, and more intuitive. And we'd be happy to pass along to our development team any specifics you'd like to share for consideration as a feature request or improvement as well. This is how we can get the best results possible, which we want to provide for you.
We'll do our best to provide you with many reasons to enjoy the app, both now and in the future - including world-class security, features that are both helpful and really cool, and clean and appealing design. Thanks for letting us know your impressions so far.

I have been a 1Password paid customer since v2. I manually (via keyboard) moved hundreds of my entires form SplashID (cringe) to 1Password before there was an import option. We've been using it across the entire family back when you could only sync via Dropbox (ugh). I've loved it because it was a great 1st class Mac app.
The "design language" of 1Password v8 with Electron is, sigh... sorry guys, garbage. It feels like something a big corporation would do because it met their "corporate objectives" of "cross platform synergies" and "leveraging development assets" and not because they wanted to make the best Mac app possible.
The choice to use Electron on Mac will open the door to a large amount of otherwise loyal users to move to a better more native Mac app when one becomes apparent. It's rather subtle, but visually and ergonomocially the app no longer "feels" pleasant, It "feels" like something to put up with to get the job done. This is not good for you long term.
The addition of the new "Appearance" preferences definitely helps (Compact/90%) to make it less cartoonish, but then they don't apply to the Safari plugin, which still feels like something drawn with a big fat crayon.
The functionality that you're putting into it is great. Although you've taken key functionality away too (like the ability to change the default save-to vault). You should have focused on putting all of the core functionality form v7 into v8 before adding new features.
The visual interface is a big step backwards. I don't like it. And when I look at it I think "Electron" and when I think "Electron" I can't help but cringe. :-(
(sorry that this comes across as so harsh. 1Password is one of my favorite apps. It's sad to see this happen to it)

I'm trying Mac v8 again now that IOS 8 is available and must say that the Appearance Preference makes a huge difference (Compact 90%). Thanks

Have they said that 1PW 8 on iOS won't be native?
There wasn't much we were able to say about iOS before, but it is available in Early Access now:
1Password 8 for iOS & iPadOS Beta π±
And from our blog post: it is "written primarily with SwiftUI and Rust." With that said, let's please move the discussion about 1Password 8 for iOS over to our iOS Early Access category so that we can keep the discussion in this thread focused on the desktop apps. ποΈ

Your passion about the issue is likely well received
Absolutely this. We rely on the passionate and honest feedback we get here to keep us on the right track. Of course we "canβt please all of the people all of the time", but our goal is to make the best password manager for as many people as we can.
this is by far the version of any versions I have ever used
@mia I appreciate your words of support. This just made me smile because the missing word reminds me of those jokes that sound like a compliment until they don't, like "Of all the apps I use, 1Password is one of them." π
