8 months agoExperiment #7 - Anti-Peek Mode
Hello 1Password Community!
At 1Password, we are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to help you use 1Password with confidence - even when you are out in the world and uncertain of how secure your surroundings are. This is why we’ve introduced Anti-Peek Mode, a new 1Password Labs feature for our Android and iOS applications that provides additional protection from unwanted shoulder surfing when using 1Password in unsecured, public environments.
How does it work?
When you enable Anti-Peek Mode in the 1Password app on your Android or iOS device, the following protections are applied making it harder for those around you to peek at your data:
- Items on the Home screen are blurred and require a long press to reveal
- Usernames, in addition to passwords, are also concealed by default on item detail screens and must be revealed to see
- Usernames are no longer displayed as subtitles for items on the Home or Search screens
- Quick actions when tapping on an item field are disabled and any actions (such as Reveal) must be invoked via the item’s overflow menu
- Recent search results are hidden.
- The “Always show passwords and full credit card numbers” option is disabled.
- Screenshots and screen recording are disabled (Android only)
How to try Anti-Peek Mode
To try out Anti-Peek mode, first, make sure that you are on the latest version of 1Password (8.10.62) on your iOS or Android device. Then, go to Settings > Labs > Anti-Peek Mode and simply enable the feature.
We would love to hear what you think of Anti-Peek Mode as we work to make this feature even better! Once you’ve had a chance to try it out, make sure to share your feedback via this survey or by simply posting a comment below.
📣This feature will only be available in Labs until May 31, 2025 so try it out today!

I turned on this feature and for weeks I thought that 1password was broken. This morning, I started a discussion because of this, but realized that this feature is casing the issues I experience. I could not copy a password and my home page was blurred, just right I signed in with my fingerprint. Glad I could turn this off.
I would agree that this is a nice feature to have, but not in its current implementation. It should be disabled by default, and it might be turned on with a toggle in the top or bottom nav bar (session-wise).
Currently, I am disabling it because it didn't make sense this way.- 1P_justin

Hello! Thanks for your feedback and sorry to hear that it caused disruptions to your 1Password experience.
Just to make sure that I am understanding correctly, when you say the following, "It should be disabled by default" are you saying that it was enabled automatically by default or that you enabled it manually weeks ago and didn't notice that it remained on? It should definitely be disabled by default unless you explicitly enable it yourself.
Having said that, I do think that accidentally having Anti-Peek Mode on could happen to users in the future and lead users to think that 1Password is not working correctly. Having some clearer indication to users that Anti-Peek mode is activated in addition to having more flexibility in terms of how to turn it on/off would improve this feature greatly. Again, thanks for trying the feature out!- dmacxOccasional Contributor
Hi 1P_justin,
Yes, I turned it on via the Lab-Settings and forget about it. Since then, 1p went worse in terms of Usability, and it felt like a big bug no one is to care about. I agree that this could affect other people as well in the future. This feature is –for me – a clear indicator that this should not be implemented via a settings page, it should be accessible with a toggle button at all time. Allow me to explain it:
Regularly I use 1p in a secure place, there is no one next to more to spy information. But in some situations I want to be certain, that no one could see this. I'm thinking about a ride in the train. An easy-to-use toggle button is then faster than going into the settings and then turning if off again after I'm leaving the train. That is what I mean with "it should be disabled by default".

This feature isn’t really helpful in its current implementation. The entries are far too blurry to decide which one is the one I’m looking for. Tapping and holding on some I suspect to be the one I’m looking for takes too much time.
At least the icon should be clearly visible, as suggested in a post above.

Appreciate the feedback! Thanks for trying out the feature. :)

It’s a great feature.
I would love to enable it more quickly. In a banking app, I can enable this with a simple hand swipe close above the camera. I believe one of the FaceID sensors detects this. This would be incredibly convenient. Need to hide your stuff? Just swipe and done.

Thanks for trying out the feature and for the suggestion! Makes total sense and something we will take a look at sometime after this initial Labs phase!

This would be great if it had the option to be used with the Location-awareness added in the “Nearby Items” Lab experiment.
It’s too clunky to access for me to use otherwise and makes the home screen almost completely useless for me.
Thanks

Thanks so much for sharing your feedback! I love the idea of tying those things together so that the feature can be a little smarter about what to hide and show.

I agree that this feature is a valuable feature and that a quick way to enable without multiple presses to get to the settings is needed.

This is a cool feature and I can see the benefits. I do think that the Home screen is too greatly affected at the moment since there’s no easy way to toggle this feature on the fly, as Manaburner mentioned. Would it defeat the purpose to still show the icon or item title since the username field doesn’t display anyway? Otherwise I’m looking at my Home screen and I can’t differentiate the items, which strips away any convenience.

Appreciate you trying out the feature! That's a great idea and one that we've discussed internally as well. I don't think it defeats the purpose but there may be some users who feel they want that additional level of obfuscation. If anything, it may simply mean that we may need to add more granular controls to this mode for maximum usability. Thanks for sharing!

+1 for this! granular control.

I like the idea, but there needs to be a way to easily enable and disable this mode like turning your phone face down or something.
When I suspect someone looking over my shoulder I need a quick way to enable this feature instead of having to fiddle around in the settings- 1P_justin

Thanks so much for taking the time to try out the feature and for the feedback Manaburner! I agree that having a quick and discreet enable option would be really useful for this particular feature. Will definitely note that down for future consideration.
