Feature Request: Autotype based on window title

Hi,
I am working with a lot of different SAP systems that I need to log into. Back when I was using KeePass I could set a window title for a password and then only needed my keyboard shortcut to make KeePass fill out my credentials.

With the Autotype feature in 1Password I am now able to fill out the logins in Windows Applications (thank you for that) but I still have to use the search function every time I need a password although the title of the window is unique for every system similar to a Website URL.
I would love a feature where I can configure a login for a window title. When pressing Ctrl+Shift+Space it checks for the currently active window title and if a login exists for that window type it directly without opening the searchbar first.

Are you maybe already working on that? Do you need any further clarifications? I would be happy to hear about that feature in future releases.

Best regards,
Stephan

    Hi 1P_Dave ,

Any news on this? We're an enterprise customer using 1Password Business and a requirement for this exact capability has just come up. In fact we are forced to extend our LastPass license due to this issue. Can you please advise if this will be made available, and if so, when?

    Many thanks

    Geoff.

Thanks for reaching out! Can you tell me a little more about your organization's need for this feature? Which app are you and your users filling login credentials into? Is it a popular app? Or a custom app developed for your organization?

And can you confirm that auto-type, as it exists today, doesn't fit your needs: Use Auto-Type in apps and browsers on your Windows PC

        Hi Dave,

Auto-type as it stands does meet the needs of this use case.

The use case is as described by the OP: for 1Password to detect which password to fill/type based on the name of the window.

This is functionality that LastPass has, and in our big cutover to bring all staff onto 1Password, the lack of this capability was a dealbreaker for several people, so we had to keep LastPass licenses for them. I wasn't thrilled about this, from a cyber risk point of view, but I'm hopeful that 1Password will eventually be able to do this so we can leave LastPass behind.

For us, one example is an IT admin that has to log in to multiple systems to administer them. They might use remote access software such as Remote Desktop in Windows. When logging into a system called HOST123, the window title would be unique to that host, and might be something like "HOST123 - Remote Desktop Connection". For this use case, we need 1Password to be able to identify the window title, and then find the correct item to fill based on that (previously saved) window title.

In this example, 1Password would look in items for a window title that matches "HOST123 - Remote Desktop Connection" and surface that to the top of the list when the hotkey is pressed. Without this feature, the user needs to manually search all items. There may be many items containing the text "HOST123", including strings like "HOST1233", so the user has to type quite a lot of the title, eg "HOST123 - Rem". Searching might seem like a minor inconvenience... but now imagine there are hundreds of such hosts. And they could be named by IP address instead of hostname, eg "10.1.2.3" or "10.1.2.5". Trying to type IP addresses manually into a search would be a pain, but there is also significant risk, because even if it is pasted or typed accurately, that search would also return items containing "10.1.2.32", "10.1.2.39" etc. The risk is that the admin enters the wrong system or uses the wrong password a few times and gets locked out.

In such a case, being able to use an exact match of the window title, as LastPass does, becomes an essential requirement.

        Hope this answers your question.

        Cheers

        Geoff.

  • Hello elidor! 👋

Thanks for the suggestion! While the auto-type feature included with 1Password for Windows will suggest the appropriate login item in Quick Access for certain popular apps, there isn't a way to set it to suggest a specific login for an arbitrary app window with a specific window title.

While I can't make any promises, I've filed a feature request with our team on your behalf. They'll look into adding such a feature in the future.
