How to stop requiring me to enter master password for every app login on iOS *WITHOUT* Face ID?

I have been forced to switch to 1Password by my corporate IT overlords.  On desktop it seems OK (ignoring a few quirks I'm working on) but on my iPhone it's almost unusable since I have to enter my master password *every* *single* *time* I want to log into an app, etc.

I have the 1Password iOS app set to "UNLOCK": Password, "Lock mobile app on exit": Never, "Lock mobile app when device locks": Off.  I open and log into the 1Password app, then without exiting the app, open a different app that requires a login and I have to enter the 1Password master password.

I've seen where using Face ID will bypass this requirement, but I don't use Face ID and don't want to for a variety of reasons.  Is there a way to make 1Password stop requiring the master password for apps on iOS without Face ID? If not WHY NOT?  The previous password manager I used did not require it, and it is a huge pain to have to do that for every login.

Under Settings - Face ID & Passcode, all options were already turned off, including "Password AutoFill".  "Other Apps" did not include an option for 1Password.

I did notice an option to "Reset Face ID". After using that option, 1Password now allows using the device passcode when needing to supply login credentials to another app.

I have not looked into Travel Mode, than you for the suggestion.

I'm happy that you're now able to use passcode unlock, I'll look into the "Reset Face ID" option and see if this is something that should be documented further in our online guides for passcode unlock.

  • Hello dwragle! đź‘‹

I'm sorry that you're being prompted to unlock 1Password more often than expected when using AutoFill on your iOS device. I've been able to reproduce the same behaviour when filling into two different apps on my end even when using Face ID and I've filed an issue with our development team to investigate this further.

For the time being, I recommend that you enable either Face ID unlock or PIN unlock so that you don't have to enter your account password each time that you fill a login:

You mentioned that you don't use Face ID, can you tell me a little more about that? Is there a particular reason why you don't wish to use Face ID unlock on your iPhone?

      Hi 1P_Dave,

      Thanks for the reply.

I tried to set 1Password to use passcode to unlock 1Password, but it tells me I need to "Turn off Face ID for 1Password in the Settings app to use passcode unlock." I found it odd it would prompt me for that since I've never turned it on, but regardless, when I click on "Open Settings" and it takes me to the settings for 1Password, there is no option for Face ID, so I can't turn it off (or on for that matter...)  And it appears to be more than a prompt that is always shown regardless of your settings, as even with the option to use passcode to unlock 1Password set, but without being able to turn off Face ID for 1Password, it still requires the master password to unlock apps.

As for my reasons that I don't use Face ID, the primary reason is that when traveling within the US Border Enforcement Zone  and/or entering the US, (and at other times) you can be stopped and required to surrender devices without a warrant or reasonable suspicion.  Courts have ruled that you are not required to surrender a passcode, but if you use Face ID or fingerprint recognition to unlock your device, they can unlock your device without your consent.  I simply refuse to submit to such a violation of my rights.

Thanks for the reply. Can you try the following:

        1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
        2. Tap Face ID & Passcode.
        3. Turn off Face ID unlock for Password AutoFill.
        4. Tap Other Apps.
        5. Turn off Face ID for 1Password.

        Next, in the 1Password app:

        1. Open and unlock 1Password using your account password from the home screen.
        2. Setup passcode unlock: Use your device passcode, PIN, or pattern to unlock 1Password
        3. Lock 1Password.
        4. Unlock 1Password from the home screen using your account password.

Then try to unlock 1Password using your device passcode, let me know if that still doesn't work.

Thank you for sharing your use case! Have you looked into using Travel Mode when crossing the border: Use Travel Mode to remove vaults from your devices when you travel
