Opening Safari Changes Applications and Switches to 1Password

Opening Safari doesn't remain very long on Safari before it switches applications to 1Password. While in Safari I begin to type the URL/URI of the web address I want to go to, but I don't get beyond the first four characters before I'm automatically in 1Password and the typing all continues there in a 1Password search while leaving the URL bar in Safari incomplete. The actions to reproduce this are to have 1Password open and Safari is not open, to then open Safari from the desktop (while it's not yet open) and then use cmd+L to take me to the URL bar and I begin typing. After about four characters I'm no longer in Safari where I started typing, but rather I'm in 1Password and the typing resumes there. Whatever happens in the background, does it need to change applications away from the Safari browser that I had just intentionally opened?

1Password Version: 8.10.58
Extension Version: 8.10.56.28
OS Version: 15.1.1
Browser: 18.1.1

Thank you for those details. I've been able to reproduce the same issue on my own Mac and I've filed a bug report with our development team so that they can investigate this further and get it fixed.

For the time being, you should be able to workaround the issue by unchecking "Reopen windows when logging back in" when you restart or shutdown your Mac. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Thank you 1P_Dave. I now have MacOS 15.2 and restarted the computer. The last apps left open before restarting were Mail, Messages, Signal, and 1Password. Shortly after opening Safari the focus changed to the 1Password app. If it matters, I generally do have 1Password already unlocked before I open Safari, and 1Password was already unlocked this time as well.

  • Hello chazzunokuthunuchtec! 👋

I'm sorry that you're seeing 1Password being focused when you're trying to type into Safari. I see that you're running an slightly older version of macOS, as a start can you update to macOS 15.2:

If you still see the issue after updating and restarting your Mac then can you tell me if you use Safari or any other apps in fullscreen mode?

Sorry for my long delay in responding.  I have macOS 15.3.2 and there are currently no macOS updates available to me.  This is an Intel-based iMac and I have the latest 1Password.  I notice the issue still, but not on long-existing sessions.  Specifically, I notice this the first time I open the Safari browser after I sign in to the account on my computer.  So, if I sign in and some apps re-open because they were open when I was last in, I can see 1Password open.  I unlock it, but this happens whether I unlock or not.  Then if I need to use the Internet I typically open Safari.  The browser was not open before (I do typically close the browser when done).  But this first time opening the browser since signing in is when it then opens in the background but switches me to 1Password base app.  If I had not unlocked it or if I had unlocked it doesn't matter.  I can switch back to Safari and from then on it will stay on Safari.  This problem does not happen again during my login session on the computer account.  Meaning it seems to happen only when I first open Safari after logging in.
