Support for Zen browser
Hi!
There's this new browser called "Zen browser"
It's based on Firefox but the 1password extension doesn't work with the desktop app
1Password Version: Not Provided
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: Not Provided
Browser: Not Provided
Hello everyone!
Thank you all for the continued feedback! For security reasons, the 1Password desktop app will by default only connect to supported browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, Brave, Edge and Arc. If you're using a Mac then you can add Zen Browser as an additional browser to the desktop app:
- Open and unlock the 1Password for Mac desktop app.
- Click on 1Password next to the in the menu bar.
- Click Settings.
- Click Browser.
- Click Add Browser and choose your browser from the Applications folder.
Adding additional browsers is currently only available for the Mac and Linux. We're not regularly adding new supported browsers individually since that isn't a long-term and sustainable solution however I've shared your requests to support Zen Browser with our product team. We hope to bring the custom browsers feature to 1Password on other platforms (like Windows) in the future.
For the time being, you may still be able to use 1Password in Zen Browser on your Windows PC but you'll need to unlock it separately from the desktop app using your account password.-Dave

I think it's pretty ridiculous that the 1password team can't keep feature parity between their apps, if a major feature like this isn't available cross-platform, especially this far off, why are you not prioritizing it, or at least providing a temporary solution? Zen browser isn't a small fork by any means, it has over 20k stars on github, which is surely a fraction of the userbase. The source code is all there, the code is signed, what is the big holdup for you guys? Giving all your users these useless canned responses to nearly every single user request is a really quick way for your users to lose faith in your ability to drive features they want and need, interactions like this are what's continuing to push people to open source solutions like bitwarden.

Whenever possible, the team aims to release a new feature across all platforms at the same time but the custom trusted browsers feature requires more dedicated, platform-specific, work for Windows that hasn't been done yet. This work is prioritized based on a variety of factors that include availability of relevant development resources, other features on our roadmap, and the need to complete other work such as security patches and bug fixes.
The team hopes to introduce the additional trusted browsers feature to other platforms like Windows in the future. I've shared your comments and feedback with the team, they're aware of the need for this feature on Windows. Thank you for the feedback and for being a long-time 1Password customer! 🙂

Dave,
You stated "No workaround exists. 1Password for Windows only connecting with supported browsers is an important security feature that allows the 1Password desktop app to make sure that it only ever communicates with a vetted safe browser with a genuine code signature and not a malicious app pretending to be that browser. "
With the utmost respect: why did 1Password create a workaround on Linux and MacOS but refuse to implement the same on Windows ? The angel in myself tells me this is to protect users as Windows is by default less secure. The devil in myself tells me the developers with their Linux machines like their more or less obscure browsers themselves (Vivaldi?) and created a quick workaround. It is hard to explain that creating an entry in the registry that is protected by UAC is less secure than creating a file in /etc/1password.
I'm not complaining as I use EndeavourOS as my daily driver but claiming the moral high ground is a bit problematic for me when the same risks exists on three OS-families but a workaround is provided on two of them.
Again, I say this with the utmost respect and I don't want to offend anyone. I just think people deserve an explanation why a workaround is provided on Linux and MacOS but not on Windows.
Kind regards,
George (customer since 2008)

I don't have an ETA to share. I've let the team know that you're eager to see the feature be built and released in 1Password for Windows, thank you for the feedback.

Is there any ETA on when the ability to add unsupported browsers will be added in windows so we can get zen browser integration working?

I'm sorry that you're running into issues when adding your account to the browser extension. We're limited in how much assistance we can provide for browsers that we don't regularly test or support but I'll help as much as possible. I downloaded Zen Browser in a Windows VM, installed 1Password in the browser, and I was able to create and add a .EU 1Password account to the browser extension. Try these steps:
- Open Zen Browser.
- Install the 1Password browser extension from the Mozilla add-ons store.
- Click on the 1Password icon in the browser's toolbar.
- Click Sign In on the welcome page.
- A sign-in page will open. Scroll down and change your region from .COM to .EU in the dropdown menu:
- Enter your account information and sign in.
- Click Add account to add your 1Password account to the browser extension when prompted.
- Wait a few moments until you see a notification that your account was added successfully.
Let me know if that doesn't work.
