Improvements to 1Password Community coming May 22nd

Since re-launching 1Password Community in February, we’ve been taking note of every piece of feedback you’ve all shared so we can continue to make improvements.

One trend we’ve seen in the feedback is that we need to make it clearer what posts should go where. The feedback also made it clear that we needed to simplify the navigation so people can get where they want to go quickly and easily.

To that end, on Thursday, May 22nd we’ll be re-organizing 1Password Community to make it easier to navigate, find what you’re looking for, and know where to post.

We’ll be simplifying the discussion board structure, reducing clutter on the 1Password Community homepage and in the navigation bar at the top of every page. We know lots of folks come here for support, so we’ve also added Get help to the main navigation to help you find existing answers, post a new question in the community, or contact 1Password Support. We hope you’ll find these updates helpful!

What’s changing?
In the new structure, we’ll have the following discussion boards:

  • Announcements: This is a new discussion board where 1Password staff can share news and updates.
  • 1Password at work: If you’re using 1Password products in your business, this is the best place to get help and share what you’ve learned.
  • 1Password at home: This is the place to get help and talk about all things 1Password for personal cybersecurity and privacy.
  • Developers: Just like before, we’ll continue to have a space for developers to chat with each other and members of the 1Password team.
  • Lounge: Just like before, this space is for off-topic, just-for-fun, and 1Password-adjacent topics.

Do I need to do anything?
Nope! Your profile and credentials will stay the same.

Will any posts be going away?
No, any posts in discussion boards that are being retired will be moved to other discussion boards so that nothing is lost. For any bookmarked discussions that are moved, their old url will redirect you to the new one.

When will these changes happen?
These changes are scheduled for Thursday, May 22nd. We will share any updates if that changes. Staff will be standing by to help with any questions or concerns.

If you have any feedback, please don’t hesitate to reply to this thread. We love to hear from you and will continue to make improvements based on your feedback. Beyond these imminent changes, you can also start new discussion threads in the Lounge and use the tag Community Feedback at any time to share your suggestions!

    Hi 2passwords 👋

I appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback!

You’re right that it’s not immediately obvious how to post a feature request if you start by clicking the feature request tag. The tags shown in your screenshot are meant to simply filter existing posts, but don’t provide a way to create a new one, which I can see how that would feel like a dead end. I’ll take this back to the team and see how we can make this a simpler process for sure.

As far as the organization, we’ve tried not to create too many spaces to start with. When you have too many forums, it can be overwhelming for new folks and you end up with overlapping topics. The Developers forum is an example of how we’re trying to avoid that problem: If you’re a developer, regardless of what type of development project you’re doing involving 1Password, that’s the space where you’ll find people with shared interests. If we find that particular topics within a forum are getting really active, then we can always split them off into their own discussion board.

For someone like yourself who is a home, business, and developer user of 1Password, feel free to post in the category that feels closest, and we’ll help make sure it ends up in the right spot if needed.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and letting us know where we can continue to improve the Community experience!

    Hey there,

It's my first time (at least in a while) posting on the forum here, and just wanted to offer some feedback on this organization.

I stumbled upon this forum trying to make a feature request post, so what I did was click on the only relevant-looking thing on the main forum page, the feature request tag. That led me to Tag:"feature request" | 1Password Community which shows the existing ones, but there was no way to add a new post from there. I was pretty confused by that and spent some time in my account profile, wondering if I had failed to finish account creation or something and thus didn't have posting permissions yet.

I gave up after looking through the preferences and profile settings. Seeing nothing relevant, I clicked on the 1password Community header in the upper left, which took me back to Community | 1Password. I clicked Join Discussions again, but still saw no way to post a new message.

The categories are also pretty confusing the way they're currently laid out:

I use 1password both at work and at home, and I'm also a developer (but of what? is that for development of third-party 1password plugins and integrations, or...?). Then there were the topic-based tags below, which apparently are just search queries and not actual categories. I still could not figure out how to post.

I eventually just randomly started clicking around more and ended up in the "at home" section and noticed the "Start a new discussion" button only in there, but what I wanted to post wasn't really about home or work in particular.

Most software-related forums I've seen are categorized by category, like "Support" or "Feature Requests" or "Bug Reports", etc. I was pretty confused by the organization here.

Also, I don't know what forum software this is (maybe Khoros Community?), but it seems to be quite buggy, slow, and... frankly kinda janky. Copy/pasting doesn't work right (images show up and then disappear, hyperlinks get mangled and cause images to disappear on preview but double-post on publish, hyperlinks don't format right after publishing, the focus indicator looks like a quote block indicator, etc. I've never struggled so much with a forum.

Was there a reason a regular hosted Discourse instance wouldn't have worked? Seems like a lot of wheels being reinvented here, and it makes the overall experience pretty hard to use. Strictly IMHO though.

I do love the 1password app itself... thanks for a great service :)
