Concerns about 1Password funding going to Omarchy

I’ve been a user (and recommend-er) of 1password for several years now (over 7, apparently!). Recently though, there was some related news that seemed rather...concerning:

https://omarchy.org/news/2026/08/1password-and-37signals-become-distinguished-corporate-patrons/

*At a glance*, this is just 1Password giving money to a Linux distro—which is, in isolation, a good thing! But I’m not sure if *this* particular distro is the one that should have been used.

Omarchy is a security mess. 4.0 included some absolutely horrifying security issues, due to an over-reliance on AI-generated glue scripts that did not bother to safely pass values around: https://blog.happyfellow.dev/merchants-of-insecurity/

The 4.0.1 changelog (https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/releases/tag/v4.0.1) includes fixes for:

  • Command injection via video titles
  • Bash injection via notifications
  • Lua injection via USB device names
  • Command injection in the `sudo reset` helper
  • Privilege escalation via path injection, due to helper scripts that inherited the usual path but are configured as NOPASSWD in sudo (??)
  • Privileged tools saving world-readable/-writable temporary files for managing credentials into fixed paths under /tmp

This is rather horrifying! I understand that both humans *and* robots make mistakes, but this set of issues does very much reek of lack of attention to security, and many of the bugfixes just strap sanitization / validation on top without bothering to re-think the fundamental approaches taken (e.g. https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/pull/7847/commits/49e870c9fd7812709c0ad97cd8851d4514a492bd and https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/pull/8129/commits/a73351a86a0fdaa5387995a36ea43d49a9048d21).

Additionally, Omarchy itself is a downstream of the well-known Arch Linux. Should the upstream here not be the recipient of at least *some* of the plentiful funding the downstream has received as of late? All the core things like kernel maintenance and security bugfixing are still the job of Arch.

Now...I will tread into perhaps the more contentious parts of this (oh noes! politics!): DHH is a right-wing racist. This has been documented elsewhere, but I will point to this single article that has a good breakdown of one of “problematic” posts: https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/

DHH writes:

> London is no longer the city I was infatuated with in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Chiefly because it’s no longer full of native Brits. In 2000, more than sixty percent of the city were native Brits. By 2024, that had dropped to about a third. A statistic as evident as day when you walk the streets of London now.

The article points out that the “a third” is *not* referring to “native brits” but rather, specifically, those who are *white*:

> 59% of Londoners were born in the UK! How could it possibly be that only a third of them are native Brits?

> The article’s first section breaks down the demographic data in a table. The first ethnicity listed? “White British” at 36.8% as of the 2021 census.

Not good! The article continues to break things down in more detail, and I’d encourage anyone who wasn’t aware, or perhaps is skeptical of these details, to read it fully. Various other articles have compiled more Questionable Moments, such as:

These include links to more posts on things such as “ADHD is fake” and “Elon Musk & DOGE are good for the US” (lol that aged well). It gets weirder the more you dig!

You could say this is all off-topic. What do the political views of one person have to do with 1password? But that brings me back to the link that started this all:

1Password and 37signals are each contributing $100,000 a year for the next three years, which takes the foundation’s funding to $12.6 million.

$300k!! Do you know how many open-source projects that Linux is built on could use that much money? How many of the projects that Omarchy indirectly depends on? Instead, that money goes to the person who uses his same Twitter he mostly posts Omarchy updates on to *also* talk about his above-mentioned Questionable Content.

Ultimately, I’d really rather not have the money I’m paying for a password manager go to this. There are so many better things out there, that don’t come with the primary flag-bearer talking about the increasingly-diverse racial makeup of a city as if a tragedy, and have an attitude towards security that’s about as cohesive as swiss cheese. Thus, I’d implore the people at 1password to reconsider this decision, with the full context that I outlined above.

Seconded, I’d be happier if 1password didn’t fund projects of such dubious quality. I took a look at the setup scripts of this “””distro””” and immediately stumbled upon a pile of messy hacks I wouldn’t want anywhere near my pc.

I was extremely disappointed to see this as well. I had come to 1Password fleeing the shortcomings of LastPass, and was very happy with it, recommending it to many friends and installing it on work computers. Now, I feel I will have to move on unless this is stopped. Bitwarden will likely be my next port of call.

Apparently I’ve been a user for 8 years by now. I guess that ends here unless something changes dramatically.

    Unfortunately I doubt it will.

Omarchy is the pet project of DHH. The other corporate patron announced for Omarchy in addition to 1password is 37signals, which DHH himself co-owns.

The other co-owner and founder if 37signals is Jason Fried. Jason is a founding patron of Omarchy.

DHH is also on the board of Shopify, The CEO of Shopify is Tobias “Tobi” Lütke. He is also one of the founding patrons of Omarchy. Lütke and Shopify have themselves been under scrutiny for platforming far right content, and quietly changing their terms of use to not prohibit it. Lütke has among other things advocated for the idea that people not paying income tax should not be allowed to vote, and that people should get an extra vote for each $100k they pay in income tax, while people on pensions should also not be allowed to vote. In other words he wants himself and his rich friends to have more voting power than others simply because they are rich. Lütke is an investor in 1Password, through the 2021 investment round. And last but not least, Lütke and DHH are both racers on their own shared motorsports team.

In other words: Lütke is himself having some questionable background, with his allowing hate speech content on Shopify, and is now dragging 1Password, in which he is an investor, into the mess, Lütke invests in the pet project of his fascist friend, that also happens to be on the board of directors, at the company where Lütke is CEO. But Shopify is publicly traded and it would be a mess to have a publicly traded company suddenly invest money in the pet project of the CEO. Hence why 1Password is suddenly being pushed in to take over.

Signed up for a community account to say: I first bought 1password Mon, 14 Apr 2014.

I am now evaluating other password managers and preparing to switch due to 1password’s unfortunate donation to Omacom. This is not okay.

Extremely tired of tech companies leadership having zero morals and ethics. It’s extremely easy not to do stuff like this!

I, too, have been a rather satisfied 1Password user for over seven years. The news about the Omarchy sponsorship reached me a few days ago. While I cannot say anything about the technical aspects of Omarchy (and frankly have little interest in yet another Linux distribution), I find supporting an organisation so deeply tied to a known racist with highly contemptible political views appalling. It brings 1Password as a company immediately into the tier of organisations I do not want to do business with.

I have earnestly started to migrate my family account (which is quite some hassle, I must say) away from 1Password, and I will cancel my 1Password subscription to the nearest possible date. This pains me, as doing the migration makes it even more obvious that 1Password is rather more advanced than the competition, not just technically, but also in Terms of UI. Nevertheless, it must be done. I, for one, do *not* want to fund suport for the ethnic cleansing of Europe.

    With not totally kind regards,
    Jyrgen N.

This is deeply disappointing and, frankly, difficult to reconcile with the company I used to associate with 1Password.

1Password used to feel like a rare example of a genuinely product- and customer-first company: thoughtful UX, a great product, and a culture that seemed to reflect a set of values I could identify with.

Committing $300,000 to the foundation behind Omarchy, a project so closely tied to DHH, despite his increasingly troubling public rhetoric and views, feels like a serious failure of judgment. The technical merits of a project don’t exist in a vacuum, and choosing who and what you financially support says something about a company’s priorities.

At the same time, it is hard not to see this in the context of 1Password’s broader transformation. After years of being proudly bootstrapped, hundreds of millions in VC funding and an increasingly enterprise- and growth-driven direction have made the company feel very different from the one many of us originally chose and trusted.

I really hope 1Password finds its way back to its roots: exceptional products, customers first, thoughtful design, and a culture with a clear moral compass. Watching that identity gradually disappear is genuinely sad.

Also just signed up to say that after several years on a family plan I’m cancelling my subscription and moving to another password manager because of 1P support to associations run and/or affiliated with DHH

    September 5, 2026

I’m a long-time family plan holder (purchased v1.4 in 2009!), and also use 1P at work. Unless there’s a change here, I’ll be looking for alternatives for personal use, and asking my company to reconsider 1P as well.

    September 6, 2026

I bought 1Password 4 2014 and have been a user since, currently 1P Family plan.

It’s a great product, and I’ve followed the good the company has done for online security (passkeys, HIBP integration, advocacy for password hygiene) and for charity.

The announcement of the Formula 1 sponsorship were when I first started to question 1Passwords priorities.

I’ve lost my trust in 1Password after learning that you become a “Distinguished Corporate Patron” of the fascist DHH’s AI enhanced dotfiles project.

    I’ve switched to selfhosted Vaultwarden.
