1Password automatically locks after a few seconds, even if the auto lock is set to 1 hour.

So this is incredibly strange... Just picked up a M4 Mac Mini with the latest Sequoia 15.5, and the latest 1password 8.10.78, and this issue persists. 1p unlocks fine while screen sharing using high performance, but within 10 seconds it'll have automatically locked itself again. i can use it just long enough to hopefully get a password copied to the clipboard... but this is a no-go for making edits or anything else with the app. This does not happen when screen sharing to a M1 Studio running Sonoma. That said, I've got a m1 macbook air running Sonoma (also prompts to unlock with apple watch or biometrics so it clearly does not understand that screen sharing is occurring),  and was just able to reproduce this again? they're all on the same 8.10.78 app release.

side note, when the screen locks on the m4 mini (Sequoia), it also outright states 60 minutes have passed.

1Password locked after 60 minutes of inactivity.

on my m1 macbook air (Sonoma), i manually set this as 10 minutes, and the timeout occurs nearly instantaneously... i actually have to be very quick to do anything in the app, over screen sharing.

i set the auto-lock to 4 hours, and suddenly it doesn't seem to lock immediately. is that where this bug occurs? some type of math issue that speeds up the assumed inactivity time and just locks out the user over screen sharing?

Low and behold! i set auto-lock to 30 minutes, and almost instance get locked out again. so the band-aid solution for right now is to set the auto-lock to a longer timeout time.. e.g. 4 hours. I have no idea why this works, but it certainly makes things easier. Apparently anything less than 1 hour (i.e. minutes) somehow shortens to mere seconds.. and longer auto-lock times has less of an impact. At "1 hour" i still got auto-locked out (while being active in the app) within just a few minutes... i'm not sure how long the "4 hour" or higher settings will work before kicking someone. I guess the only viable long-term band-aid solution for now is to just set Auto-Lock to "never" and wait for 1P to fix their bug.

Two questions i now need answered re: Screen Sharing usage.

  1. Why does 1Password.app outright ignore user "activity" over screen sharing?
  2. Why does 1Password.app not properly calculate inactivity time set in Settings/Security/Auto-Lock over screen sharing?

1Password engineers... could you please test this and confirm?

my god thank you - this has helped me use High Performance mode - and not have 1password lock automatically after seconds! thank you!

Hello folks,

Our development team has released improvements to how auto-lock works with certain configurations such as high-performance screen sharing on macOS. Please update to 1Password for Mac version 8.11.12 or later:

If you still see the same issue after updating then please let me know so that we can investigate further.

Hey @1P_Dave ,

I might be doing something wrong here - but my 1password is still shutting on me after around 10 seconds.

I'm running 1password 8.11.14 and macOS 26.0.1 on the remote machine - as well as the local one.

I bumped up my lock time - but it's not done anything.

@tomatoandcake

I'm sorry that you're still seeing the issue. I've let our development team know so that they can take a look. If they require any additional information from your end then I'll reach out.

Hi @1P_Dave ,

I'm not sure what changed, but using the latest `8.11.14` version, this has gotten significantly worse. as another has recently mentioned, it no longer matters what value is set... the only way for 1Password Mac to not be closed after just a few seconds is by setting `Auto-Lock` to `Never`.

This is incredibly disappointing. I get that this is perhaps a more niche use case, but clearly several customers are impacted by this, and it's been lingering for 2 years now.

Please do not close this as solved... it absolutely is not solved.

Hi @1P_Dave ,

has there been any movement on this? I've been using my Remote Desktop a lot more often lately and it's getting a little frustrating having 1Password lock on me every time I go and use it.

I can use my local machine's 1Password, however copying and pasting via the screen share - when I screen share on multiple monitors, is a bit of a pain. I have to change it from full-screen, do my password grabbing and back into my screen share session.

If there are logs or anything that may help here - I'm willing to help out if need be!

I see this problem has been stuck here for a while.  I have 1Password for Mac 8.12.2 and can confirm exactly the same symptoms as described in these posts:

  • when I access my Mac mini as a remote desktop (using VNC from Finder) in high performance mode, 1password arbitrarily locks after just a few seconds
  • when i access it with low resolution mode, 1password is ok
  • setting for when to lock seems to make no difference: currently I have auto lock when device locks or sleeps deselected, and lock after idle set to 15 mins

Will there be a fix for this?
