Bug: 1Password asking for password on system startup

Ever since the last 1Password update for Windows (8.11.18), 1Password now opens when starting Windows and asks for the password to unlock. It is explicitely set not to do that, by having the corresponding checkmark in settings (General > Open 1Password on startup) unset, but this setting seems to be ignored now. It was working correctly before the last 1Password update. There is nothing set up in Windows itself to open 1Password.

Using Windows 10 Pro 22H2 (19045.6575), fully up to date.

Hello folks,

I understand how disruptive it can be that 1Password opens its main window on startup rather than running quietly in the background. I’m sorry for the inconvenience. This was a known limitation of Windows 10 affecting the MSIX version of 1Password, and it’s been resolved in version 8.11.22 and newer.

Thank you for your patience as our development team worked to resolve the issue.

I have the same problem and its quite annoying.

November 14, 2025

Previous builds (user since 2023) have all opened minimized to the system tray, with the password prompt only appearing when I actually click on "Unlock 1Password" in a browser window.

Since updating to 8.11.18, instead of opening to the system tray, 1Password now opens at system startup to a maximixed window prompting for a password.

Is there any way I can get it to return to the previous state of opening minimized on startup?

I've seen this behaviour on both my PCs

1Password for Windows 8.11.18 (81118036)

Windows 10 Pro 22H2

OS Build 19045.6575

Firefox 145.0

Add-on v8.11.16.35

The same thing is happening to me.

Used to start minimized, with an icon in the system tray. About a month ago I had a few instances where it DIDN'T show up in the tray. And now it opens the app every time Windows starts, which is really annoying.

I also have this behaviour on both my Win 10 PCs

I am seeing the same behaviour with the same Windows 10 version

Workaround posted in another thread: "1Password no longer opens minimized since 8.11.18 update, Windows 10."

Uninstall existing 1Password (msix) and reboot

Install 1Password from msi

Edit registry entry to --silent

Thank you! Useful information, but that is not a solution or bug fix, that's a workaround. So waiting for a fix for this still.

True. It's good enough for my needs. I've edited my post to indicate that it is a workaround rather than a solution.

Update: Issue still not solved in version 8.11.20.

Is the 1Password development team working on an improvement--to have an auto startup--without the need to enter the master password?  Thank you.

Can 1Password at least acknowledge that they are aware and working on solution?
