Performance issues with 1Password for Mac 8.10.78 (desktop app)

I'm adding to this to avoid creating a new thread on what seems to be related. Mac OS 15.5 1Password 8.10.78, on various M series Macs. The app itself is incredibly slow. Even typing in any field takes a few seconds to appear, and there is a definite lag in any action whatsoever. Typing a large string of characters freezes the 1PW app. I had to remove the extension in Safari because it was making the browser so slow, it was unusable. Further, the small 1PW icon (Safari) in any field appeared to be dead. Clicking on it fails to do anything. The issue does not seem to be present in either Edge or Firefox, both of which extensions are working fine and without delays, although the actual app on the Mac desktop itself remains practically unworkable.

Hello folks,

After investigating the issue, it was found that customers who are running into recent performance issues with the 1Password for Mac desktop app were all using the Intel-based version of 1Password on an Apple Silicon Mac.

While our installer will install the correct version of 1Password for your Mac, you might have ended up with the wrong version if you migrated the 1Password app to your current Mac from an older Mac. Using the Intel-based version of 1Password on an Apple Silicon Mac isn't supported and it can result in performance degradation.

Our team can help verify that you're affected by this issue and then help you move over to the correct version. Please create a diagnostics report from your Mac:

Send a diagnostics report (Mac)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com

Yes indeed. Identified my version of 1Password as "Intel". Deleted and downloaded the latest version from 1Password.com. Now it's a lovely "Apple Silicon" version. Better than it ever was:)

I'm happy that reinstalling 1Password resolved the issue.

I would have thought that 1Password would automatically update to Silicon when it detects a Silicon Mac... since I didn't check, I don't know what the issue was, but fully deleting and re-installing did do the trick. Thanks to anyone who recommended that before the root cause was determined.

Our installer will automatically detect the correct architecture and install the appropriate build for your system. For folks who didn't freshly install the 1Password app on their current Apple Silicon Mac, but used a tool like Migration Assistant to move it over from an old Intel Mac, then our developers are working on a feature to move them over to the correct build on a future update.

Thanks for sharing these details—it sounds incredibly frustrating to deal with such persistent lag, especially in a security-critical app like 1Password. Have you tried clearing cached data or reinstalling entirely? Sometimes residual files from updates can cause conflicts.

On a tangential note, performance hiccups remind me of how outdated dental equipment can slow down clinic workflows—which is why modern practices like https://dentallcy.com/dental-services/ invest in seamless digital systems for patient records and appointments. Smooth operations matter whether you’re unlocking passwords or checking teeth!

Hope 1Password’s team releases a fix soon—maybe their devs need a "tune-up" too! (P.S. Edge/Firefox working fine is a useful clue for their support team.)

Hey Dave,

Support ticket ID:  FZN-54278-355

I submitted a diagnostics report and screenshots to support@1password.com. The rep told me they couldn't click on email links for security reasons and told me to upload my files to a link they provided. I clicked on the link the following day and it was expired. There was no indication in the email that the link would expired after a certain period of time. Do those links typically expire in 24 hours? If so, it would be nice to have a warning, so I can prioritize it. Also, I hope the 1Password team allows us to upload diagnostic reports and other links either via the app or are 1password.com account.  As everybody knows, email is not very secure and it's not the best way to submit sensitive information. And if we have to email back-and-forth twice, or more (in my case) to upload links to a special file uploader, it makes the process a real pain. I included this forums link and my forum username in my follow up emails, not in the original email.

Also, I'm glad people seem to be having success with doing a fresh install of 1password Desktop, but i'm curious how this solution relates to this Mastadon post a year ago from 1Password team member Mich Cohen:

https://mastodon.social/@mitchchn/112554241440225925

He talked about why the extension in Safari is slower and more unreliable than in other browsers and why it has so much trouble working with Safari profiles. He also talked about the trouble 1Password has with iOS. He made it pretty clear that while 1Password could improve, the problem lies with Apple and "at the end of the day the fix really does have to come from upstream". Is this "fresh install" fix a reputation of that post? Does a fresh install on silicon macs fix the problems the extension has with Safari profiles. How about on iOS?

Thanks!

@treesquirrel

Thank you for sending in the diagnostics report. I'm sorry that the secure upload link expired before you were able to use it. I'll pass your feedback along to our operations team.

The performance issue being discussed in this thread relates only to the 1Password for Mac desktop app, not the browser extension. If you're seeing a performance issue with the browser extension then that that will need to be investigated separately. I see that my colleague has sent you a reply via email and I recommend that you continue the conversation there since our support team will have access to the information that you sent in and will be able to advise further.

Now that I'm retired and boondocking full time, I took the time to run a diagnostics report.

1Password is from the mac App store, and the account is cloud based. Starlink Mini runs very fast, consistently, since I'm always in the open. Happy to test if needed. MacBook Pro M1, macOS always up to date, 1Password always up to date, and no third party crap (antivirus, etc.).

Look like I'm also running the Intel version of the app, even though I'm on Apple Silicon.

My account is cloud based, so not worried about losing data, but will do a full backup just in case.

Will shout back with result...

I had the same problem on an M3 Mac. And only with the desktop app. The Safari browser extension responds to keystrokes without delay, but in the desktop app it sometimes took several seconds. After uninstalling and reinstalling, the problems were solved.

The instructions can be found here:
