private links not working correctly outside of the browser

While clicking on a private link in the browser (or copy pasting the URL into a browser) seems to work fine, when I click on that same link from somewhere else, it does open the 1password app but does not bring me to the correct item.

I tried clicking on the link from several other apps - VSCode, Terminal, Notion and this seemed to be consistent.

I can't be sure if this is a mac-only issue, but I am on a mac.

Hello theozero! 👋

I'm sorry that links to items aren't opening correctly from non-browser apps. I can reproduce the same issue here on my end and I've filed a report with our development team so that they can look into this further.

Hopefully the issue can be fixed in a future update soon. For the time being, copying and pasting the private link into your browser should result in the correct item opening in the 1Password app.

I confirm both issues
- on iOS, if 1Password is previously ✱not✱ opened (or locked), then click on a private link would open 1Password, without taking you to the item referenced on the link. You'd have to go back to wherever the link is, click on it again, and only then 1Password would display the item.

- on macOS, it just doesn't work: even if 1Password is opened and unlocked, clicking on a private link just bring back 1Password application in the foreground, but that's it.

These are not critical bugs, but it's annoying.

@1P_DaveThis bug was reported almost a year ago and is STILL not fixed?

The issues remain open in our developer's backlog and I've added your reports to the internal tracking items open for the issues. I'm sorry for the continued inconvenience.

Guys 2 years and no fix? Not sure how this thread is marked as solved when there is no solution or even workaround? To be clear this affects any OS/Device running 1Password 8 and has been an issue since the introduction of 1Password 8. It's a pretty simple bug that has some pretty severe impacts depending on the workflow. Please give us more than this has been passed onto the devs because it's been 2 years and nothing has changed. Keenly await your reply.

@DaBarkle

I'm sorry for the impact to your workflow. The issue is still open in our developer's backlog and I don't have any updates to share at the moment. I'll share your feedback with the team.

Hi Dave,

It's always the same "I don't have any updates to share at the moment", and it is not acceptable IMHO.

We are paying customers, and we deserve an ETA.

Not a wild guess that, like most (all) companies, you have deadlines for your tickets. So either this ticket is such low priority it's like "most likely we'll never be fixed" and it doesn't have a deadline, or it isn't and in that case it should have a deadline. and if so, as paying customers, we deserve to know.

Frankly, I am a long, happy 1Password customer, but I'm so frustrated to have always the same answers from customer supports (not only 1Password). I'm sure a good customer support is a BIG differentiator among providers for all customers, and you could be in the good basket ... but finally you decide to do as most (all) your competitors, i.e. "I don't care about my paying customers ... at least not enough to give REAL answers to their requests".

Last but not least, why don't you change the status of this discussion ? "Solved" ?!?! Again, it shows the level of respect you have for your paying customers :-(

The "Copy Private Link" button will create a link, but that link does absolutely nothing useful.
This has been a complained about issue for a couple years now, no resolution, no priority.

I have 1P for Business, Family, and Personal. All of them extensively use "use private links" in documentation, or "where is that credential" requests. All of that is broken.

Other people have complained that "this isn't critical, just annoying". No, it's critical for the ongoing utility of 1Password in these environments. Teams rely on being able to reference a specific secret directly. I am having to type out "go to the XXX vault, sort by most recent, it has YYYYYY in the title/tags you can search". I sound like a chump, and critical "do this in case things are going bad" runbook documents that were written when private links worked (or under the assumption that it was a brief bug) now need to be re-written with instructions on how to find that secret.

op:// reference values are not clickable by a human end user, and while i love them for automations, it shouldn't be an either-or thing.

The expectation is and should be:
- copy private link button exists
- it generate a link that will only resolve if you have secret access
- someone with secret access clicks that link, and is taken to that secret (in every native application)
- someone without secret access clicks that link and is rejected or confronted with a login screen (whatever is appropriate)

The behavior is:
- copy private link button exists
- that link brings the 1Password application to the foreground
- no deep link between the URL (that goes to a specific secret) and that secret
- no vault change, no going to that specific value.
- cry that my push for 1Password being the "single pane of glass for humans to interact with secrets" was undermined by 1Password acting like Microsoft (derogatory).

Most users are, per your recommendations, running the 1Password desktop applications on macOS/windows. Though i've heard "the link isn't working" from iOS, android, and web users as well.

I have no idea how to find 1Password entries when somebody sends me a link.  I have tried logging into the 1Password portal in the browser and then clicking the link.  Doesn't take me to it.  AT A BARE MINIMUM, I wish we could paste the link into the 1Password desktop app and have it find it for me but that doesn't work.  I always have to ask my colleagues to tell me what the item is named so I can search for it myself.  Our internal documentation uses 1Password links all over the place but I can't click on any link and have it take me to it.  So frustrating to have to track people down to get the name of the item.  Especially if I'm in a maintenance window and need access to something.  Chances are I can't reach who I need to reach to ask them what the item is named.

The fact that we can't deeplink from our internal pages like:

onepassword://{our-organization}.1password.com/vaults/{vault-id-number}

but we can via:

https://{our-organization}.1password.com/vaults/{vault-id-number}

Is a bit infuriating.
