Request: Turn off username guessing in the apps [RESOLVED]

When I go to create a new login, the user name is prefilled with an email address I haven’t used in years. This shouldn’t have any email address, especially when I use Fastmail’s masked emails. I hope this is a bug and not a normal thing.

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to share that, with the latest update to the stable version of 1Password (8.10.78), our team has added a setting to turn off the prefilling of usernames when creating new items in the app:

You can find instructions on how to update here: How to keep 1Password up to date

Thanks again for all of the feedback and for always helping us make 1Password more useful for your needs and your workflows.

I am finally back in.

@1P_Dave

My wife, daughter, and mom HATE this as much as I do. My wife and mom are asking if we can switch to a different password manager because they are done with this feature.

MAKE THIS OPTIONAL PLEASE!!!!!

February 13, 2025

What the others have said: PLEASE MAKE THIS OPTIONAL!!!! It annoys the hell out of me.

Was about to raise this as a bug too then found this. For what it's worth please add my vote to at least being able to disable this feature.

I am the same use case as the person below who has they're own domain so use footlong@mydomain.com for example.

This feature just adds extra steps to mess up for item creation.

Cheers

@1P_Davethis is now on Reddit, and someone said they are movingbecause of it. Looking at this person other post, they use SimpleLogin, so this feature is 100% useless for them if you do something with Fastmail.

I definitely going to do something for my mom, because this is really driving her nuts. I am looking for options now for her, to have an 80 something year old lady to change their ways of making logins (using the extension) because you guys added this feature is ridiculous.

My renewal is in October. I’m not leaving yet, but I am also not going to manage 2 password managers for my family for very long.

In addition to making this optional, IMO, this should also be a setting that is not defaulted.

If it is defaulted, Org/Family admins should be able to default this setting to on/off.

As an IT Manager, my team dealt with 6 IT helpdesk tickets just today that we can identify as most likely related to this change.

@kcsantos

Thank you for the feedback, I've passed your request along to the team internally. Can you tell me a little more about the help desk tickets that were generated as a result of this new feature? I'd like to know a little more about how the new item creation flow is being received by your users, and where specifically it isn't working for them, so that I can share that with the team as well.

I am on beta and it now fills a username. There are articles all over the internet why it’s a bad idea to reuse a username. Why does anything need to be filled…. At all? There are 2 separate posts on Reddit about people not linking this.
Also@1P_Dave how is this showing “Solved” when it’s not?

I am moving my mom and in-laws to Bitwarden in the next few weeks because of this. The family account is created and I just need meet up with them to help them. Why on earth you’re not giving us the option to shut this off is beyond me.

Thanks again for the feedback, I've shared all of your comments with the team that's working on item creation and, while I can't promise any specific changes, they'll take your comments into account when planning future changes to how items are created in the 1Password app.

Are your mom and in-laws using email aliases as well? Or do they mostly use the same email address for everything? The latest beta version of the 1Password app allows you to choose which email address is suggested by choosing a default identity:  Choose your default identity and credit card items

This change will make it to the stable version as soon as possible.

 how is this showing “Solved” when it’s not?

Marking a post as a solution to a thread doesn't mean that the issue/request itself is solved or closed. It's a way to highlight the most up-to-date answer for anyone who stumbles onto the thread in the future.

Please don't forget that not all logins are email addresses and especially that not all login names are the exact same! It's still without any doubt necessary to be able to turn this off entirely.

February 24, 2025

This is a real problem. I too use my own aliases, and the unintended consequence is that my wife's email is always suggested as the user name for every new item. I suspect it's because her email address is the most common user name in the vault. This assumption is a bad one.

@1P_Daveplease give the users control over this, to turn this feature on/off, and if on, to set the default email address to use.

@dpsr

Thank you for the request and I'm sorry that the new feature is getting in the way. I've shared your feedback with the team internally.

The team plans to add ability to directly choose which email address is suggested based on your default identity. This new functionality is currently being tested in the beta version of the apps and will make it into the stable version soon.

How about the ability to suggest nothing?

I feel like 1Password just wants to add a feature just to add one despite people asking to shut it off completely.

My mom has aliases with Outlook, I think she has 5 of them (1 for shopping, 1 for important stuff, etc)…. and one she uses when she signs my dad up for stuff (he doesn’t use the computer, but even Social Security and Medicare requires an email these days). I know my FIL uses Gmail and uses plus-addressing for majority of his accounts, so they are different email addresses. My MIL uses iCloud and she has 3 and basically does the same as my mom. All 3 of them make accounts the old fashion way, because none of them trust the extension to capture everything…. which I done at times also (I find it easier to make a custom alias with Fastmail with my own domain, and then make the login in 1Password at the same time).

I now have people calling me saying 1Password is broken, and get pretty mad when I tell them what’s going on. I recommend 1Password to friends and family, mainly it’s very easy (especially for older friends of my parents since it’s user friendly) since I’ve used it since 2014ish. So, they are now mad at me, and this is why I AM NOT happy with this at all. I am telling them to move to a different password manager if they want, I wouldn’t take it personally.

All there needs to be is a switch “use most used email address for new accounts” and a switch “on or off” in the settings. This should also be off by default. Messing around with the default identity is not the answer…. keep it simple (my mom can’t use this because she makes and keeps track of my dad’s stuff too and I don’t want to teach her too much new stuff because she is up there in age).

Echoing requests to make this opt-in or have an account-wide Web UI toggle to disable.

Personally frustrated, professionally frustrated, a good proportion of ~150 colleagues frustrated.

This isn't a positive change.

@xioso far it’s “they are working on improving it”. We don’t want it improved, we want an off switch. I have people who I recommend 1Password too going to other password managers because of this, and making me look bad.
A person on Reddit also left 1Password because of this. My wife wants to move also, but for now, I convinced her just her work stuff and we will give it until a month or 2 before our renewal.
I had to set up a family account on Bitwarden for my mom and in-laws because they are done with this feature. The fun part, I’m the one who has to fix this all with my family and friends who I recommend this too.

March 5, 2025

@prime without a doubt there’s a high level of frustration, we’ve encouraged people to use password managers so much that it’s become a part of their lifestyle.

The unfortunate reality is no matter how secure 1Password may be, there’s an expectation of convenience and usability; this will be the likely thinking for people considering migrating away.

1Password should be rolling this back and improving it as an optional feature, it shouldn’t be that difficult for their developers to achieve.

March 8, 2025

Yeah I have this problem as well and having it act like this to put it bluntly is garbage.

I'm at the point where I've all but removed the old email from all of my logins, and it is STILL autofilling the old email, I'm at the point of moving things where I'm considering deleting said old email so having it come up as a "suggestion" will be completely useless in the next few months.

This should be optional as with other features, and forcing something like this on 1pass users is preeeeetty annoying especially when I'm essentially "breaking up" with that email only to be "reminded about it" every time I use my password manager.
