Request: Turn off username guessing in the apps [RESOLVED]

When I go to create a new login, the user name is prefilled with an email address I haven’t used in years. This shouldn’t have any email address, especially when I use Fastmail’s masked emails. I hope this is a bug and not a normal thing.

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to share that, with the latest update to the stable version of 1Password (8.10.78), our team has added a setting to turn off the prefilling of usernames when creating new items in the app:

You can find instructions on how to update here: How to keep 1Password up to date

Thanks again for all of the feedback and for always helping us make 1Password more useful for your needs and your workflows.

The problem is still not solved, it is very frustrating, is anyone even looking into this?Each time 1P sets the default email address and generates a password

They have until about October - November for me. They said they are doing something, but no time line. I find it funny this thread is growing and we are still waiting. Someone on Reddit said they left 1Password because of this and my mom and in-laws went to Bitwarden…. So far they lost 3 people.

I'm also thinking about transferring my account to Proton Pass, I'm just waiting for it to be possible to add attachments because it's important to me, and on reddit they wrote that it should be ready this week. It's very strange that 1P didn't do anything to solve this problem.

I’d like to add my voice to this topic.

I understand that the pre-filling of the username field is meant to make it easier to create new logins.

However, it doesn’t take into account that users (especially privacy- and security-conscious users, who are likely a core target group for 1Password) use different email addresses (aliases or “hide-my-email” addresses) or different usernames for different logins.

In fact, in a blog post from December 3, 2021, you even recommended using different usernames for different logins—just as passwords shouldn’t be reused.

With that in mind, this feature (which unfortunately has no opt-out option) is problematic and, for many users, doesn’t solve a problem but instead creates new ones.

Personally, every time I try to create a new login, I get a username suggestion that I’ve only used once and that doesn’t even appear in my identity entry. I’ve specifically created a default identity entry that contains neither a username nor an email address—but even that workaround doesn’t seem to work for me.

Additionally, I have to point out that several core aspects of using a password manager have unfortunately become quite frustrating recently:

  • Creating new logins with automatically suggested usernames that can’t be disabled and often give unwanted suggestions
  • Unwanted opening of entries in edit mode after launching the app (I believe this has been fixed)
  • Moving multiple elements within an entry (fields or sections) not being saved correctly (there are several bug tickets and forum posts about this)

All of this is making the user experience increasingly frustrating for me.

For me, it’s important that upcoming updates really focus on these core aspects and bring bug fixes instead of introducing new features.

Even though it might remain just a wish, it would be great if 1Password introduced a legacy management feature that allows designated trusted individuals to access an account in the event of death (a long-standing request—Proton Pass plans to introduce such a feature in the coming months).

As a long-time and enthusiastic user of 1Password, I’m sadly a bit disheartened by the feeling that I’ve recently been forced to test more and more unfinished and immature features—or run into bugs that really shouldn’t be part of a final release that gets rolled out to what are likely millions of users.

I’ve said that also in a post. I just look, I created this thread 4 months ago and we still here wishing there was an off switch.

I think it's about time the "solution" post was unmarked for this discussion.

This remains incredibly frustrating.

@xio

Thank you for the feedback. I've posted an update here.

Does the new feature allowing you to set a default identity to always have the same email address be suggested help? Or are you using unique email addresses or usernames for almost all of your login?

Afraid not.

Professionally, I have ~10,000 items in my primarily accessible vaults, spanning 3 live and ~15 acquired businesses. I have 6 different email addresses which I have to use daily. Personally, every website uses a different email address/username.

There is no such thing as a default identity for power users.

Hello folks,

I wanted to provide an update here where everyone can see it. As discussed, 1Password will automatically fill your email address in the username field and generate a password so that you can create new items faster. Username suggestions are based on the vault that you’re creating a new item in and are suggested based on previous use.

In the last month (March 2025) the team has made an improvement to the feature, you can now configure a default identity and always have the email address of that default identity be suggested when creating a new item: Choose your default identity and credit card items

The team will continue to iterate further based on everyone's feedback and are looking into adding a setting to turn off username suggestions in the future. We'll continue to keep the community updated on new developments. Thanks again for all of the feedback!

Choosing a default identity in no way solves this issue, because the whole point is that we don't want a default username at all. Instead of enabling faster creation of new items, this just slows it down and creates an opportunity for incorrect information to be saved.

Thank you for the feedback. The team is looking into adding a setting to turn off username suggestions in the future but I don't have a timeframe on when this might be done.

Hello folks,

Thank you to everyone for the continued feedback regarding 1Password automatically filling your email address in the username field for faster item creation. In the most recent beta version, I'm happy to share that we're testing a new setting to allow users to turn off automatic username filling if they wish:

UPDATE May 15th, 2025:
The feature is now available in the beta version (8.10.78) of 1Password. Once testing is complete in the beta, the team hopes to release the feature to the stable version as well: Use 1Password beta releases

I've just installed the beta purely to be able to turn this annoying "feature" off!

Much better... although it would be better still if it also didn't still suggest a password.

Same. Had it always done this? I don't remember although I noticed it today too!!

I tried downloading the Safari extension for iOS and it is not in test flight. How do I set up browser extension beta release for iOS?@1P_Dave

@thecatfix

Thanks for the ping! The feature being discussed in this thread exists in the 1Password apps, not the browser extensions.

How do I set up browser extension beta release for iOS?

On iOS, 1Password for Safari is bundled with the 1Password for iOS app. You can download the beta version of 1Password for iOS using TestFlight: Install a beta release of the 1Password app

Once the app is installed, use this guide to setup 1Password for Safari: Set up 1Password for Safari

Note: If TestFlight says that the 1Password for iOS beta is currently full then you'll need to try to install the beta again later. Spaces do free up from time to time.

5 months on and still in beta? Are there not feature releases for 1PW or do they only do periodic releases to smooth the QA process and aggregate changes?

I have multiple e-mails for different needs  .finance , .shopping etc so I can drop them if they get sold or turned into a spam dump. The auto suggestion is not helpful for me.

@mgrobins

Thank you for the feedback. The new setting was just released in the beta version of the 1Password app on May 14th, 2025. As soon as testing is complete in the beta, we hope to release the new setting to the stable version soon.
