Question

Safari extension losing settings after updates

It seems that randomly, my Safari 1Password extension settings get reset after an update. This includes settings like which vaults are selected, the default save destination, and the dreaded auto-submit setting. It doesn't happen every time, but it has happened with the last two updates I installed (8.12.29.1 and I think 8.12.21.1).

It’s not a new problem, and it happens on my iPhone, my Macs, and my iPad. And when it does, it means a huge waste of time for me as I have to fix everything.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Hello @BobW! 👋

I’m sorry that you’re seeing your settings get reset in 1Password for Safari. Your settings should always be retained, even after an update so we’ll need to investigate why you’re seeing the behaviour that you are.

Can you tell me if you clear Safari’s history/cache regularly? Using either Safari’s built-in tools or a third-party app cleaner? If you do then clearing the browser’s data will also clear the settings information that the 1Password for Safari browser extension saves locally on your device in order to remember your chosen settings on that device.

If you’re not clearing Safari’s data then let me know and we can dig deeper.

Hmm, it hadn’t occurred to me that the extension might be affected by clearing browser data, but I suppose that makes complete sense.

That said, I almost never clear anything on a global basis. I’ve probably done an explicit clear-all maybe three times in the last decade. I do, however, open up the dev inspector and nuke data for specific sites when I’m having problems. I also don’t use any “cleaning” tools that might be doing this.

As this seems like the sort of problem that might be a royal pain to diagnose, maybe you can give me some things I could inspect before and after the next couple of updates, with the hope of catching it happening.

@BobW

Thanks for the reply. The next time that the issue occurs, can you note which specific settings are lost on that occurrence. And whether any settings that you’ve set are retained. I'd slo like to ask you to create and share a 1Password diagnostics report from 1Password in your browser right after the issue occurs:

Send a diagnostics report (browser extension)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com

With your email please include:

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number.  Please post that number here.  Thanks very much!
