Saving and filling issues on iOS and macOS

Between the desktop and mobile apps, quick access, extensions, and web, 1Password has the best UI and ease of access of any password manager I've tried.

But, I can't deny that as a daily user (since 2011), the number of random issues, passwords not recording, extension/autofill issues, and more have become more of a weekly or even daily occurrence, rather than a one off, especially since 1Password 8 was released.

This isn't an anti-1Password 8 post. In fact, I like and prefer 1P8 to any previous version.

It seems like the product needs to take a break from features, though, and refine everything that's there until it's rock solid, like Apple did with Snow Leopard. Issues - at least ones that I regularly run into -  persist for months to years and don't seem like they ever get addressed.

Hello @fuchal! 👋

Welcome to the community! I'm sorry that you're running into issues with 1Password on iOS and macOS. You mentioned running into random issues with password not saving or filling, can you provide some more detail about that? Which apps or websites did you run into the issues on? Which browser are you using? I'd like to investigate and get bug reports filed with our development team so that we can get those fixed.

I see a screenshot from your iPhone with the error "HomeScreenView.swift 103", can you tell me how you ran into this error? Are you able to reproduce it again using specific steps or did you only run into the error once randomly?

Hey Dave!

In regards to the HomeScreenView error, I opened the iOS app the other morning and the Home view didn't populate. Clicking another tab showed that message. A force quit and relaunch fixed the issue.

I typically use iOS, Safari on iOS, and Safari (primary) / Firefox / Chrome on Mac.

Some other issues I see regularly, some more often than others:

  • 1P iOS app Home / Items view populates slowly after a few seconds
  • Safari crashes when opening 1P extension preferences
  • Browser extension won't open until browser is restarted (shows an error inside the extension panel)
  • Autofill won't appear until page is reloaded -  other tabs work fine
  • Recently had an issue where all browser extensions were out of sync from the desktop app. The only way I could resolve at the time was to disable Desktop app integration in each extension. I uninstalled and reinstalled the apps and extension but it didn't solve the issue. It fixed itself over time.
  • Today, changed a password on Microsoft on iOS Safari. 1P popped up to save the password. I chose Update existing item, but the new password was not reflected in 1Password when I looked.

I have multiple Macs, and I eventually see the same issues on each.

Is this just on your Mac? Or on iOS as well? If it's on your Mac then does Safari crash if, rather than opening settings through the pop-up, you right-click on the 1Password extension in the toolbar and then click Settings

@1P_Dave Just on Mac. Safari does NOT crash if I right click the icon in the toolbar and click Settings! It does if I open it through the popup. That's great to know because now I can access those settings! Strangely - if I set up a new user account on the same Mac, opening Settings via the popup does works fine for some time. Eventually, it will start crashing. I'm not sure when though, because I've tried a bit of setup (adding my extensions, apps, etc) and it was still working.

In regards to the HomeScreenView error, I opened the iOS app the other morning and the Home view didn't populate. Clicking another tab showed that message. A force quit and relaunch fixed the issue.

I have a feeling these are related - it doesn't happen every time, but it seems to happen when 1P hasn't been opened in a while (ie. overnight). I think but I'm not sure (i'll investigate) - if I change tabs before 1P has populated, I end up with that error. (iOS 18.5, 1P 8.10.76 81076034)

I suspect that you might be running into a known issue with 1Password in Safari. Can you tell me what the error message said? And is this on your Mac or on iOS?

Yes, this seems to be the same issue that others are reporting with Safari for Mac as well where the extension eventually stops communicating?

I uninstalled and reinstalled the apps and extension but it didn't solve the issue. It fixed itself over time.

I haven't had this issue since, thankfully, even with desktop app integration enabled again. If it ever occurs again, I can do some more deep diving.

Thank you!
