Hi!
There's this new browser called "Zen browser"
It's based on Firefox but the 1password extension doesn't work with the desktop app

Hello folks,

I'm happy to share that you can now add Zen Browser as an additional browser to 1Password for Windows. Follow these steps:

  1. Install 1Password in Zen Browser from the Firefox Browser Add-ons Store
  2. Add Zen Browser as an additional browser to 1Password: Connect additional browsers to the 1Password app

A couple of notes:

  • Make sure that Zen Browser is installed system-wide with admin permissions in the C:\Program Files folder.
  • Zen Browser is not an officially supported browser and you might run into unexpected issues. If you see those same issues with a supported browser like Firefox then let us know by starting a new discussion and we can investigate.

I am using 1Password on both Windows and MacOS, having the custom browser feature only on Mac is just sad. Especially when an email reaches my inbox that Perplexities Comet is basically supported  on launchday...
By now, after 2 years, this would be the thing pushing me away from 1Password, if it weren't for the other family members on my plan

@xfallme

Thank you for the feedback! The additional browsers feature is currently available for macOS and Linux and our team recently gave an update on how things are going with our work on the Windows version of the feature in our Reddit AMA

Yes! Happy to share that we are on track to make custom browser support available in the Beta channel on Windows in November. It's taken a long time because the feature required a unique trust backend on Windows. 1Password has to be extremely careful with custom browser support: we trust you to decide which web browsers you trust, but the problem is that any process on your PC can pretend to be a something else.

As an example, let's say you add Opera to your list of trusted custom browsers. 1Password needs to be absolutely sure it's really talking to Opera, and not an app that silently replaced Opera or is impersonating it. Otherwise there would be a real risk of leaking all your secure data to any process that asked for it. macOS has a simple way to verify app identity with bundle identifiers, but there's nothing quite like that on Windows. So we built a new trust mechanism from scratch for Windows that uses a combination of heuristics, code-signing, admin privilege checks, and user verification prompts. It's pretty neat and will let us bring other features to Windows that might have needed to be Mac-only in the past.

We hope to share more concrete news as soon as we can.

I just wanted to add my voice here and say that I find it very unfortunate that Zen Browser is still not supported on Windows.
Zen has become my primary browser, and not having proper 1Password support is a real drawback in my daily workflow.
I hope official support for Zen Browser can be prioritized in the near future.

@maxblazin

Thank you for the feedback. We're not currently planning to expand support to specific browsers like Zen Browser. Instead, we're working on our additional browsers feature that will allow you to add the browser of your choice to the 1Password for Windows app. We've just started testing the feature in the experimental nightly version of 1Password and we hope to bring it to the beta and then the production version as soon as possible.

I just installed the latest 1Password Nightly on Windows and the 'Connect to additional browsers' option finally showed up! Just keep in mind that the browser needs to be installed under 'Program Files', they don't allow browsers installed anywhere else for some reason. But at least it works now.

Hello! We are indeed testing the feature in the latest nightly version of 1Password for Windows, I've replied with more detail here

This really isn't good enough.

I have cancelled my subscription before it renews in three months. If this feature isn't added by then, I won't be reactivating it.

1Password used to be my go-to recommendation for a password manager, but the price is no longer justified when core features are missing from Windows and Linux, and I can't use the browser I want to use on my choice of operating system if I want my password manager to integrate correctly.

Lastly, if you are going to dictate what browsers people should be using with 1Password, then this list should be expanded. "We're not currently planning to expand support to specific browsers like Zen Browser." - you should be.

It's available in the nightly release channel for 1Password. I've been using it for a little while now and it's been working like it does on Mac OS
