Windows Hello opens in background and doesn't function correctly

The last 3 days windows hello (in use with 1 password) doesn't accept input.  And somehow caps lock is on even though the keyboard doesn't show it on.  I saw that this was an issue a year ago, but it just occurred again with my system.  I am on Win 11, with the latest updates, no VPN, using Chrome with the browser extension.

I then get repeated requested to enter my full 1Password credentials.  However after an hour, the timeout for 1Password, the same problem occurs.

I have tried un enabling and then re enabling 1Password, to no effect.   I also rebooted and then ran a full Microsoft Virus scan, but nothing was found.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your patience. Our development team has released a fix for the issue in the latest update to 1Password for Windows (8.12.1):

We’ve fixed an issue where Windows Hello prompts could appear behind app and browser windows.

Please update to the latest version of 1Password for Windows: How to keep 1Password up to date

If you're still seeing issues with Windows Hello appearing behind other apps/windows after updating then please let me know by replying to this post.

Oddly enough, just started having this issue yesterday (1/14) after installing the latest (Jan) Windows 11 update.   Running plug in 8.11.29.1 in Edge 143.0.3650.96.

I am facing this problem as well! And immediately after this happens my keyboard's shift key gets stuck and if I click, for instance, on home page button on edge, my home page opens in a new window, my mouse scroll button stops working correctly and other problems until I unlock my Shift key. As if this wasn't enough, the 1password window is not showing maximize, close and minimize buttons
EDIT: I've managed to solve the missing window buttons  by pressing F11

F11 worked for me - though, I think I had to do Function F11. It took a few tries.

I have a similar issue to you.

In my case, first of all it comes up with the windows hello password prompt, I try to enter my PIN, but the keyboard will not input any digits, using either the main keyboard keys or the numerical pad.  So I click on cancel, try to input my full password, but the first three characters come out as if on caps lock, so it fails.  In addition, any numericals in the password instead use the characters above on the keyboard.  Doesn't matter if using the main keyboard or the numerical pad.  Just the symbols above are inputted instead.  eg '*' instead of '8',  try again and it works fine.

I am also on Win 11, with the latest updates, no VPN, using Chrome with the browser extension same as you.

Hopefully they will be able to sort this out soon.

I am experiencing the same issue as well.

When I press the Shift key on a physical keyboard, the problematic state is resolved, but this issue occurs intermittently and is extremely frustrating.

I suspect the cause may be a Windows update — KB5074109 (26200.7623).When this update is removed, the issue no longer seems to occur.

I hope the 1Password team is aware of this issue and will address it.If they avoid taking action by saying it is a Microsoft issue, I think I will need to look for an alternative solution.

Having the issue as well.  Hitting the shift key gets you out of the Caps Locks issue.

Same problem and just as frustrated as everyone else.

January 2026 and out of nowhere I'm having the same issue. Can't enter pin in Windows Hello popup and then the shift key is stuck momentarily after cancelling and trying to unlock with standard password.

Same thing happened to me and it seemed to happen right after a Windows update.

I'm having the exact same issue. A restart of the computer clears up all the non-sense but within 24 hours its back. Just started happening this week.

I am experiencing the exact same issue. Here are my details:

System: Windows 11 Enterprise
1Password Version: 8.11.23 (81123001)

Symptoms:
1. Entering the Windows Hello PIN is not possible (keyboard input is ignored).
2. If I skip the Hello prompt to enter the password manually instead, I noticed a specific behavior: The field only accepts uppercase letters (it behaves as if Shift or Caps Lock is held down, even though it isn't).

Workaround:
The only solution is to completely quit the 1Password application and restart it. After a restart, it works normally again.

This issue has occurred repeatedly over the last 3 days.

Same exact issue for the past 3 days, on 2 different desktops.

The only fix I've found so far is a reboot.

This started for me on my business accounts roughly around the time the latest round of MST updates. (Coloration or causation, I am uncertain but its suspicious). It does not appear to be occurring to all license holders on my business account-  today this added feature of annoyance has propagated to my personal commuter and account.   once the problem starts happening, usually after leveraging windows hello in the context of 1password, it acts like I have  different keyboard applied-  the cap lock reverses, special characters have an alternate output and more- this occurs in various areas and apps. If I bounce the 1password services task manager, the problem resolves until the next time.

I see this was reported 3 business days ago with no response from support...  is this the usual level of support response?

It happens almost the same to me:

3 different PCs (2 with W11 Pro and 1 with W11 Enterprise) and it doesn't matter the browser (Egde or Chrome) PIN with Windows Hello doesn't get keyboard tapping. But in my case, rebooting Windows doesn't solve the issue.

Hope it can be solved ASAP as it is very annoying.

Thanks!

I registered today just to chime in and say "me too". Never had an issue with 1password until the last couple of days -- but this is a real problem. I suspect the app's interaction with recent Windows updates is to blame.
