Accessing Vaults on a New PC

Hey again -

One more question -- we seem to struggle with moving a vault from one computer to another when we replace computers. Do we need to export that vault somehow and move it to the new machine? Or just log into the 1PW extension and/or app on the new machine and the vault comes with it?

Hi @dfarrell, thanks for following up with us! This seemed like a new topic to me, so I've just moved your post to a new thread.

Any vault a user had access to on their old computer should be available on their new computer once 1Password is deployed or installed, and the user signs in and authenticates. The vaults and any items therein are tied to the account rather than the machine.

If you and your team are still running into some roadblocks with this could you share a bit more about the behavior you're seeing? Has there been an issue installing 1Password on the new computers, signing in to existing 1Password accounts, or something else?

We did figure out that they can sign into it on the new computer, but it prompts them for the Transfer Key from the old one. The majority of the time, that is accessible, but if they're getting a new one because the old computer died, there is no Key available, and the only solution we've found so far is to initiate a Recovery, which gets a bit clunky.

The other thing is - we still haven't come up with a good process to transfer a term'd users' account to a manager. We use SSO, so we can log into their computer and see the vault that way, but there's got to be a way to move the vault to another user (manager) account without having to log in as the old user.

Thanks for clarifying that for me @dfarrell, that makes sense.

In cases where the previous computer has died, or is otherwise inaccessible, initiating a recovery as you mentioned is likely going to be the best path forward. If your staff access 1Password on more than one device, such as a managed mobile device, there may be some options to access the transfer key there. That said, I understand not all organizations have staff using multiple devices. While I can't say if or when the options might change for setting up a new device, I've shared your comments about the clunkiness with the team.

If the user is leaving on good terms, directing them to transfer any items to a shared vault can help with this. We have some suggestions for this in our offboarding guide.

Whether or not a user is leaving on good terms, we would recommend resetting passwords for their accounts. If you're using 1Password Business you can create a report for the specific user to help identify which accounts will need to be reset.
