Clarification on 1Password Item Expiration Alerts and Email Notifications

Hello 1Password Support Team,

We are currently testing the item expiration alert feature in 1Password.

As part of our testing, we configured an API Credentials item with an expiration date, and the item now displays an "Expiring soon" notification indicating that the credential will expire on 21 July 2026.

We would like to understand the notification behavior for this feature:

  1. Is the expiration alert displayed only within the 1Password application/web vault?
  2. Will users who have access to the item receive an email notification when the expiration date approaches?
  3. If email notifications are supported, can they be configured or customized by administrators?
  4. Are there any specific requirements or settings that need to be enabled for users to receive these notifications?

We would appreciate your clarification on how expiration alerts are delivered to users.

Thank you for your support.

Best regards,
Ashish Rawandhe

Hi @arawandh thanks for reaching out!

Adding an expiry date to an item will result in that item being flagged in two places:

  • As a banner at the top of the item itself.
  • In Watchtower's "Expiring Items" section in the 1Password app.

While I don't have any plans to share about having 1Password sending email notifications for expired items, I've filed a feature request with our Product team so that they can consider adding this feature in the future.

Let me know if you have any questions.
