Extension Gets Stuck Saying "Unlocking..."

Within the past week, most of the users at our company have started experiencing an issue with the 1Password browser extension in both Chrome and Edge.

After signing into the extension using SSO, the extension icon changes to show that it is unlocked — the lock icon disappears — but when the user clicks the extension to open the menu, it gets stuck on “Unlocking…” and never fully opens.

We have found a temporary workaround, but it is inconsistent and not practical for regular use:

  1. Click the SSO button to unlock 1Password.
  2. After the SSO tab opens and closes, immediately click the 1Password extension again before the lock icon disappears.
  3. The extension briefly still shows the SSO button, then successfully unlocks and displays the menu.

However, this only works temporarily. If the user tries to open the extension again on the same browser tab, it goes back to being stuck on “Unlocking…”. If the user switches to a different tab before opening it again, it appears to remain unlocked for the time being.

This is affecting both Chrome and Edge. So far, the few users we have who are using Firefox do not appear to be affected. However, most of our users do not have have access to Firefox, so switching browsers is not a practical workaround for us.

This also seemed to start around the time Chrome updated to Version 147.0.7727.102, which resolved the previous 1Password-related issue we were seeing, but this new issue started occurring afterward.

Current versions in our environment:

  • Chrome: 147.0.7727.103
  • Edge: 147.0.3912.86

Also worth noting: we do not have the 1Password desktop app installed on our users’ computers. They are using only the browser extensions.

Has anyone else started seeing this behavior recently, especially in Chrome or Edge with SSO-only extension usage? Are there any known workarounds, policy settings, extension settings, or browser flags that may help resolve or mitigate this?

Hello @MNWardrop! 👋

I'm sorry that you're seeing an issue where 1Password in the browser locks unexpectedly or gets stuck on an "Unlocking..." prompt. Our development team is aware of the issue and is currently investigating.

To workaround the issue, until a fix is released, you can choose either of the following options (not both):

  • Install the 1Password desktop app and restart your browser: https://1password.com/downloads/windows
  • Or, if you'd like to avoid installing the desktop app, you can turn off app integration:
    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings
    3. Turn off "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app".

We hope to release a fix as soon as possible.

I have been using 1Password Chrome extension without issues for 4 years but all of the sudden I have been having issues for the past 2 weeks. The extension is making me type my password every single time I click it, and I use 1Password at least 50 times per day so it is pretty annoying. Before, the extension would lock itself after a period of time if no activity was detected, but now it happens all the time. I did some research and it seems it is a Chrome issue, but I upgraded to the latest versions twice in the past 2 weeks and the issue remains there.

Chrome Version 147.0.7727.138

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this?

Thanks

Hello @HRAI thanks for reaching out.

I'm sorry that you keep having to unlock the 1Password for Chrome extension so frequently.

It sounds like you might be running into a known issue our developers are currently investigating that can occur when the 1Password desktop isn't installed on Windows devices.

If you do not have the 1Password desktop app installed, can you try the following steps and see if the issue persists?

  1. Right-click the 1Password icon in Chrome's toolbar and choose Settings.
  2. Toggle off the Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app option.

If you do have the desktop app installed or the above suggestion doesn't help, I'd like to ask you to create and share a 1Password diagnostics report from 1Password in your browser:

How to send a 1Password diagnostics report

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com

With your email please include:

Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions.

I never installed the Windows 1Password app in my laptop and never had this issue. So I guess in a upgrade of the 1Password extension that setting was turned ON by default and started causing the issues.

It seems this solved the issue, thanks for your help!

  1. Right-click the 1Password icon in Chrome's toolbar and choose Settings.
  2. Toggle off the Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app option.
