Support Credentials for Linux / credentialsd as a system passkey provider

I would like 1Password to participate in the Credentials for Linux project and eventually implement its proposed credential-provider interface.

Linux currently lacks the operating-system credential-provider integration available on Windows and macOS. As a result, passkeys stored in 1Password on Linux are generally available only through the browser extension. Native applications, Electron applications, sandboxed applications, and browsers without a working extension cannot request those passkeys through a standard system interface.

This creates a significant feature-parity gap:

• Windows 11 provides a common WebAuthn platform experience for browsers and native applications. It supports passkeys managed by Windows Hello, physical FIDO2 security keys, mobile devices, and third-party passkey providers.

• macOS provides a native credential-provider and AutoFill framework. Since 1Password 8.12.32, 1Password’s macOS AutoFill integration is generally available on the stable channel. It allows 1Password to act as a native credential provider, including creating, filling, and updating passkeys in Safari and supported desktop applications without relying on the browser extension for those flows.

• Linux has no equivalent stable system interface through which 1Password can make its passkeys available across browsers and native applications.

The Credentials for Linux project is developing credentialsd and a proposed XDG Desktop Portal to provide that missing interface. Its current provider proposal specifically considers password managers such as 1Password and includes provider registration, user-controlled enablement, credential selection, and WebAuthn request handling.

The credentialsd maintainer has mentioned receiving design feedback from people at 1Password, which is encouraging. I would like 1Password to become involved more formally by:

• Reviewing and contributing to the credential-provider API and security model.

• Publishing the technical and security requirements that 1Password would need before implementing it.

• Participating in upstream discussions with credentialsd, desktop environments, browsers, and xdg-desktop-portal.

• Helping ensure that the proposed interface can bring Linux closer to the system-wide passkey experience provided by Windows Hello and macOS AutoFill.

• Eventually allowing 1Password for Linux to act as a user-enabled system passkey provider.

This would allow passkeys stored in 1Password to work consistently across browsers and native Linux applications. Individual applications would no longer need a dedicated 1Password extension or integration merely to request a passkey.

Could this be recorded as a feature request and shared with the Linux desktop and passkey teams? If an internal request already exists, please add my interest and use case to it and provide the public discussion or internal reference number if possible.
