"Type in Window" function

Since the recent update the type in window function no longer shows me all of my open windows so I cannot use it. I frequently use sites that do not allow me to paste into them, nor do they work with the browser plug in. Being able to type in the window in this manner has been a great time saver. Can this functionality be fixed?

I am running Windows 11, and I have the Oct 5 update of 1P loaded.

Hi @Awesomeoman and @JKROBERTSON, thanks for sharing these examples!

Our developers were able to identify the cause and have been working on a fix, which should be available in the Nightly version soon. I don't yet have a timeline for when this fix will reach the Stable version.

I'd recommend keeping 1Password up to date so you receive the fix as soon as it's released. You can also keep an eye on our release notes page for news: 1Password Releases

I am seeing the same problem with the latest release 1Password 8.12.40 on Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise. The list of applications to Type in Window does not populate correctly with the expected values.

In the log files under AppData\Local\1Password\logs I can see many entries like:

[1P:foundation\op-type-in-window\src\windows.rs:21] Excluding window from options list due to the following error: Window(HWND(65856)): Error Win32(0x00000102): The wait operation timed out

And:

[1P:foundation\op-type-in-window\src\windows.rs:21] Excluding window from options list due to the following error: window has no title: Window(HWND(65858))

I have tried uninstalling / reinstalling as well as removing all remnants of local data with no success. I have also tried installing the Beta branch but it has the same issue.

I did find that there is an older version 8.12.36 available via winget, and installing this with fresh data allows the Type in Window functionality to work as expected, so I will run this version in the meantime until the issue is fixed.

Hello

With the latest release of 1Password for Windows 8.12.40 on Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2 and Windows 11 Home 25H2, the Type in Window function does not appear to enumerate the list of running applications correctly. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both with saved data and after resetting 1Password from the advanced settings, as well as the latest Beta release but the issue persists.

This is what I see as available applications even though I have many other windows currently running:

It should look something like this (excuse the redacted windows titles):

In the \AppData\Local\1Password\logs log files, I can see many entries like this:

[1P:foundation\op-type-in-window\src\windows.rs:21] Excluding window from options list due to the following error: window has no title: Window(HWND(856102))

[1P:foundation\op-type-in-window\src\windows.rs:21] Excluding window from options list due to the following error: Window(HWND(65858)): Error Win32(0x00000102): The wait operation timed out.

I have installed an older release 8.12.36 which is still available via Winget with fresh data and the issue does not exist, so it appears to be a new with one of the releases post this. I have turned off automatic updates for now and will continue running this version until the problem is fixed thank you.

Hi @kjhughes3514 and @Awesomeoman, I’m sorry to hear that Type in window isn’t displaying all of your open windows. This is a known issue at the moment, and I’ve added each of you to the list of affected users. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

Could you share some examples of app windows that used to be listed before the recent update, that now no longer appear, so I can add these to the bug report to help our developers? If this is something you’d rather not post on a public forum, you can email the details to support@1password.com with a link to this thread, and your forum username.

In the meantime, you may want to try dragging and dropping from the 1Password app. This performs a drag-and-type action, which may work in this situation. You could also try Auto-Type from Quick Access, which works slightly differently from Type in window: Use Auto-Type in apps and browsers on your Windows PC

Hello @1P_Gem

This is typical of what I see when trying to use the functionality on the latest version. The applications it is showing are not those I would normally expect to see and sometimes there can be many instances of the ‘System tray overflow window’:

After I rolled back to the older release, these are the applications I can see available. These screenshots were taken on the same OS instance with the same applications running:

It looks like the drag and drop workaround is valid for my use cases as well, so thank you for that.

An example above - not all Windows are displayed, and some hidden windows are.

I’ve noticed that the order appears to be dependent on WHAT windows I have open.

If I have Office 365 Excel open, for example, then the list is abbreviated, but if Excel is not open the list is more inline with what I expect to see although the hidden windows still appear.
