I split your comments from the original conversation which was five months old. It is possible to show the categories in 1Password 8. The option is in the Appearance tab under the section Always show in Sidebar.

The last thing I want is multiple vaults. I've never separated my items into different vaults. That just means more maintenance headaches.

I could understand providing an option to configure the sidebar to show vaults or categories or both, but removing the category list and providing no option to reinstate it is simply bizarre from a UX perspective.
