2 years agoExperiment #3 - Nearby Items
Hi y'all!
I can't believe we are already shipping Experiment 3?! This one has a very special place in my heart. This project actually came out of a Hackday we did internally. Everyone was SOOOO excited about it, we wanted to share it with our users to get your feedback.
Nearby Items allows you to assign a location to an item. Then, on mobile only for now, we've added a section to the home tab that shows you items that are close to you physically. Pretty awesome, right?
The basic hypothesis here is that because people are more and more mobile, the items you need quick access to might be different based on where you are in the world. If your building at work has a door code, we'll show you that when you pull up. If you've got a storage shed, we'll show you the combo to the lock when you arrive.
This experiment is our first exploration into physical space. We know we're not "done" but wanted to get early feedback to help shape how this project evolves from here.
We're eager to hear your thoughts on Nearby Items. Let us know what you think below in this thread.
The primary questions I'm trying to answer are:
Does adding a location to an item help you get things done faster and with less friction? Do you see value in continuing to explore physical locations for items in any form?
What are the use cases where you think having an item's physical location would be valuable? We have some ideas, but I'm sure there are tons of things we aren't even thinking about.
This is a v1. If we continue to work on Nearby Items, what should we add, change, or modify to make it more valuable to you as a user?
Does it make sense to also show "nearby items" on Desktop computers?
Do you think that the current form of Nearby Items is good enough to ship in the Stable product?

I would like to suggest adding location for vaults. I have a specific vault for home, work, volunteering, etc that I use most often in certain locations. It would be nice to have 1password default to those vaults.
I hope this feedback is useful to others as well

Hey trimiMidake đź‘‹
I'm sorry that Nearby Items isn't working for you. Being remote shouldn't be an issue as long as your mobile device has a working GPS.
You should see a checkmark in Settings > Labs > Add locations to items.
Then you can edit an item and add a location.
When you're physically close to the location you added to the item, that item should appear in the Nearby tile on the Home tab (you may need to adjust the search distance).
If you don't see the Nearby tile, tap the Pencil icon to customize your Home tab and add it.

This feature hasn't worked once for me. Perhaps my zip code 23901 is too remote?

Appreciate you, dbalpert !

Got it - yes, I saw the WiFi QR code. I misunderstood if you said that ability for memberships was now there - I see you were asking if something analogous to the QR feature would be useful, and yes, I think it would be. Appreciate everything you all do!

dbalpert This should take you through the steps for a QR code for your Wifi (Wireless Router Item in 1Password). You'll need to have a network name, and password.

What you're describing is great opportunity for membership items to work a little harder, now while I cannot say what is or isn't doable, I am sharing this feedback with the team who work amazing things with our item management - so letting them know.

Thank you, Doodler_Benji!
Are you scanning this from 1Password? I wonder if you might benefit from a similar ability to our recent updates to have a QR for Wi-Fi, but in your case, displaying a membership QR/Barcode, or even image if its a unique barcode graphic.
I’m intrigued! Where do I read more about or access this feature? A quick search didn’t make it appear.
What I’m doing is taking a picture of the back of the card, which has the barcode, and attached that photo as an attached file. Then at the checkout machine I can pull up the item in 1Password, open the attachment image, zoom in to make the barcode big, and hold it up to the scanner.
The same goes for the gym membership, and I’ve done this with a supermarket loyalty card also though at most supermarkets you can type in your phone number so it’s not needed there as often.
A feature to make the barcode more explicitly stored - and easy to bring up when in the relevant location - as opposed to having a picture would be neat. They are all just regular barcodes (the kind with the vertical lines, not a QR) as far as I can tell, so I guess they ought to be able to be stored as a number and then rendered as bars, though I can’t say if building that logic is a worthwhile thing or not.

dbalpert Thanks for giving nearby items a try! The library card and gym locations feedback is definitely on par with what we're hearing and i'm grateful you've taken the time to come and let us know you're putting it through its paces!
It has a barcode which I scan at a machine to check out books.

PS. If you get a notification about me removing your comment it's because for some reason your comment showed up twice so I zapped the second one.

I'm very excited to try this feature! I just enabled it. Want to echo the many people who asked for multiple locations. For instance, one main use case I want to try is saving my library card there. It has a barcode which I scan at a machine to check out books. That way I don't have to carry the actual plastic card or keychain tag. However, the library has many branches, several of which I use regularly.
Similar for my gym which has 2 locations - I know others mentioned that use case. For that one, since there are just 2, I duplicated the entry and put one location on each copy; that works okay because the gym doesn't have a password, it's just a barcode, but the library has a password (for the online catalog) and this doesn't scale well for many locations.
I'll follow up once I've had a chance to actually use it some more! Thank you 1Password team for doing this!
