dteare I am really surprised by your answer. All the applications I use regularly on macOS and Windows that use any kind of item counting use static displays outside the list. None of them include the count in the list, as that would make the display invisible most of the time. So why reinvent something that already exists? I agree that it needs additional screen space but why not just add "Show/Hide item counts" to something like a view menu like most other applications do?
I'm really curious about the alternative way you are mentioning.
