Installing 1Password in the Applications folder and app integration

I think I figured it out. I have the 1Password apps in a different directory from /Applications. This used to work fine for 1Password (I had it running this way for years), and does not cause an issue with any of my other apps, but now it seems to matter. Moving it to the /Applications folder "corrects" the issue. Why? I should be able to place applications anywhere I like, other than privileged system areas.
