Unnecessary "Save Login" panel

I often get an alert saying "To save a login, unlock 1Password first." -  right after I use 1PW to fill in login credentials. This makes no sense - first, I just unlocked 1PW to get it to fill in the credentials, so why am I being told to unlock 1PW? Second, 1PW clearly already has the credentials for this web site. It just filled them in. What's the purpose of the alert? 

The sequence is

  • Go to a web site requiring login credentials
  • Use cmd-\ to invoke 1PW autofill
  • 1PW asks for 1PW password, I give it
  • 1PW fills in name and password 
  • 1PW puts up alert saying"To save a login, unlock 1Password first." See screen shot.

MacOS 15.3.2, Safari 18.3.1, 1PW app 8.10.68, 1PW Extension for Safari 8.10.70.27.

    Thank you for confirming that and for posting the screenshot of the prompt. This is a known issue that can occur when you use the 1Password for Mac desktop app's Universal Autofill feature  (Command-Backslash) when 1Password for Safari (the browser extension) is also installed. Our development team is currently investigating and I've added your report to the internal work item open with the team. 

    For the time being, until the issue is resolved, I recommend the following workaround:

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click the 1Password icon in the toolbar, then choose "Settings".
    3. In the "Notifications" section, turn off "Allow 1Password to show unlock notifications".


    I'm sorry for the disruption, hopefully this is fixed soon.

    Hello @dmitch77! 👋

    I'm sorry that you're seeing an unexpected prompt when using 1Password. It sounds like you're unlocking and using the desktop app's Universal Autofill feature to fill your login information (using Command-Backslash) and then 1Password for Safari (the browser extension) is asking you to unlock it so that it can check to see if you already have a saved login.

    What should happen in this case is that 1Password for Safari (the browser extension) should unlock at the same time as when you unlock the desktop app to fill your login using Universal Autofill and then be aware that you've filled an existing login. As a first step, I'd like you to make sure that the communication between the desktop app and the browser extension is working before we investigate further: 

    1. Open and unlock the 1Password for Mac desktop app.
    2. Click on 1Password next to the  in the menu bar.
    3. Click Settings.
    4. Click Browser.
    5. Make sure that "Connect with 1Password in the browser" is on.


    Then in the browser:

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
    3. Make sure that "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app" is on.


    Then try to reproduce the issue again. If you still see the issue then do you see a green dot in the browser settings page? Or a different coloured dot and an error message?

    This is something that has broken with a recent update to 1Password. None of my settings have changed and I've been utilizing 1P using the autofill shortcut for quite a long time. 

    This was also reported on Reddit with no response from anyone from Agilebits, https://reddit.com/r/1Password/comments/1jc9ubj/popup_login_already_saved_every_time_i_autofill/

    I'm hitting the end of my ability to continue to tolerate the bugs that continue to be introduced into 1Password and are breaking functionality with no information or warning of.

    Welcome to the 1Password Community! Thank you for providing those additional details, it looks like the communication between the desktop app and 1Password in the browser is working on your Mac based on those screenshots so we can rule that our as the cause of the issue.

    In your case, and I suspect the case of many in that Reddit thread, it sounds like you're running into a known issue that our development team is currently tracking where filling a login using Command-Backslash will result in a message from 1Password that the login is already saved. I've added your report to the internal work item and I've flagged the Reddit thread to the  team internally as well. 

    I've done some testing and I'd like to suggest the following workaround: 

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click the 1Password icon in the toolbar, then choose "Settings".
    3. In the "Notifications" section, turn off "Allow 1Password to show unlock notifications".


    Let me know if the workaround doesn't help and you continue see the same behavior.

    @1P_Dave  - Can you tell us what (desired, intentional) functionality we'll be missing if we disable unlock notifications? I.e. will this disable functions that one would normal want?

    Thanks for the question! If you manually type a password into a website and sign in and 1Password is locked, you won't see a notification to unlock 1Password so that 1Password can save that password. You'll need to remember to unlock 1Password first before typing in the password.

      I'm having the same problem recently where the Save Login modal appears when I hit Command-\ on websites where I already have a working login saved in 1 Password. Then the modal stays in the upper right until I manually close it. This never used to be a problem until maybe 3-4 weeks ago...? 

      EXPECTED BEHAVIOR
      No notice at all (or, at most, a quick confirmation modal that slides back out within seconds). I've got a working login and I'm not updating it, so there's no reason for a request to save the login or do anything.

      SPECS
      I'm running latest 1Password for Mac 8.10.72 with Universal Autofill selected and Safari ext 8.10.70.27 on Safari 18.4 / MacOS 15.4.1.
