Can't log into 1password on Android after update to Android 17

After updating to Android 17 yesterday I can’t log into 1password on the device at all.

When I try to use the 1password app on my Android phone 1password presents the usual login screen asking for the passkey (no biometric option).  When I enter the passkey the app responds “That didn’t work.  Please try again.”  Trying again produces the same result.

I have verified that I am entering the correct passkey and I can still log in to 1password on my computers.

I have force quit the 1password app in Android and cleared the app cache but the problem remains - i.e. I can’t log into 1password on the phone.

I have also verified that there are no updates to the 1password app available in the Play Store.

Needless to say, this is kind of an emergency as loosing access to all my passwords is about as bad as loosing access to my phone.

You don’t mention that you contacted 1Password support about this, else did not mention your ticket number, both of which you should. Bear in mind that they will likely take a while to respond.

Where is the passkey which you use to authenticate for the 1Password app stored?

If you don’t fix the problem yourself or get help from support in time, a reset (i.e. kill and clear cache and data) or fresh reinstall of the app should be fairly quick and painless. There is almost certainly no important data on the device itself which will be lost.
As a precaution, ensure that you are logged in to your 1Password account from another device and have you Emergency Kit, recovery codes, etc. available before starting.

So I tried to reply to this earlier this afternoon but my post seems to have been deleted (it was there for a while but it’s gone now).

I won’t bother reposting the whole thing but the the short version is that none of those suggestions work.  Including removing and reinstalling the 1password Android app. Regardless of what I do the app always says that my password doesn’t work (it works on every other device I use).

Second, I’ve used 1password since 2009 and I’ve never needed to have a support ticket number to ask a question in this forums before so I didn’t know that I did this time.

Third that link you provide to 1password support has a mailto: field of “removed by moderator” so it’s pretty useless.

My long and detailed reply got a similar treatment, reported here. As you did, I’ll write a shorter version this time since the original was completely lost.

A clean install of the 1Password app along with the unlikelihood that you started mistytping your password after an Android upgrade points to the problem being elsewhere.

Try using good keyboard such as Futo isf you use Gboard, else try Gboard. Turn off all autocorrection and modification.

Failing that, try changing you password to a short (fewer than 30 characters) simple passphrase using only characters directly accessible on the soft keyboard and on a US-English keyboard.

My use of “should” invoked my own authority based on observing @1Password_Community staff here.

I didn’t know that I now have to contact 1password support and get a ticket number before I can post a question here (I’ve been using 1password since around 2007 and never had to do that before.)

The TLDR here is that I’ve done everything you suggest, and more, and none of it works I can’t log into the the 1password app on my Android phone since updating from Android 16 to Android 17.

In detail:

As I mentioned in my original post, I did most of what you suggest and since posting I have deleted and reinstalled the 1password app on my Android phone.

To sum up:

o Force quitting and clearing the app’s cache doesn’t fix the problem.  Still won’t accept password.

o Force quitting and clearing the app’s cache and storage doesn’t fix the problem.  (After doing this I can re-link the app to my 1password account using a QR code form one of my computers but as soon as the app asks for the password again it doesn’t accept it.)

o Uninstalling and reinstalling the app doesn’t fix the problem (it somehow “remembers” my account between uninstalling and reinstalling and just asks for the password - yes, the password, not the secret or whatever it’s called - which it doesn't accept it)

o Uninstalling, reinstalling, running the 1password app and not being able to use password, force quitting, clearing cache and storage, running app again, using a QR code from computer to link app to my account, waiting 10 minutes (or whatever it is), then trying to log into 1password app doesn’t fix the problem.

In the all the cases that I deleted the cache and storage and reconnected the app with my account via a QR code, I got emails from 1password confirming that a new device was added.  And just to be clear, I know my 1password password… getting the QR code requires me to log into the desktop app on my computer using the password  that doesn’t work in the Android app.

Anyway, since it seems that shouldn’t be posting here since I don’t have a support ticket number I’ll not post any follups to this.

Hi @notMyUserName, thanks for posting!

Just to clarify, you don’t need a support ticket number to post here. However, sign-in related issues like this, where you’ve already tried a lot of the initial recommended steps with no success, are often better handled through email with our support team, as they’ll be able to look at diagnostics and discuss account-specific information with you, which we’re not able to do here on the Community. I believe this is what AJCxZ0 was getting at.

With that in mind, I'd like to ask you to create and share a diagnostics report from 1Password for Android: Send a diagnostics report (Android)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to: support@1password.com

With your email please include:

You’ll receive a reply with a Support ID number. You can post that number here to help us connect the dots. Thanks!
