Native Password AutoFill Extension macOS

So one of the people in my family subscription for 1P relies heavily on iCloud Keychain. The nice piece about using the native autofill extension is entries from both show up together in-line. This happens on iOS (or if you use other password managers it secure by each provider but both are offered the same way together).

in terms of migration and allowing those who wish to use both depending on the context. It would be nice to support the native autofill extension, but further it limits exposure or need for safari extension. Should someone not want to use or can't install the extension due to work policy or just rather not use safari extensions

thanks.

IMHO the solution to the Safari issues is to talk to the macOS-password/passkey-APIs instead of using a plugin in a browser.

Is there any update on the macOS native integration?

Any updates on this now 26.4 is out?   Did the improvements in 26.4 provide the necessary missing features that you need to make native autofill on MacOS a reality?

@1P_Dave would you mind touching base on this?

Hello folks,

The macOS AutoFill feature is now being explored in the nightly version of 1Password! If you're using a nightly build, you'll see 1Password appear as an option for macOS AutoFill.

Since nightly builds are early previews of what we're working on, this feature is still a work in progress and isn't documented. You might notice a few rough edges or areas that aren't fully implemented just yet. Our team is actively refining the experience and working through known issues as we move forward.

We're excited about where this is headed and will share more updates, and a full announcement, down the line. In the meantime, if you have questions or spot anything unexpected while using the nightly version, we'd love to hear from you!

edit: macOS AutoFill is now being tested with the beta version of 1Password and we plan to share a fuller announcement soon.

I just installed the nightly version and can now select 1Password as the Mac autofill option. One early observation. I still can't select 1Password for "Set Up Codes In". Hoping that will come as things move along, but wanted to give feedback, just in case, that that second option is also really wanted!

I have the same observation. Additionally, every attempt to use "1Password" in the inline autofill menu results in a "Failed to connect to 1Password.app" message. Hopefully, this will get resolved in a new nightly build.

Thank you for this update! This is excellent news. I will likely install the nightly version in the next day or two. I really appreciate the update.

Dave,

Is there a place/way to leave feedback on the nightly builds? I’d love to be able to offer some beta testing feedback if that would help.

@chopin1012

Thanks for helping us test the feature in the nightly! You can leave your feedback here in this thread and we'll make sure it gets back to the team.

Awesome news!   Will deffo take a look at this!

I figured out that it needed to be connected to the browser at present. I was then able to get autofill to function. I had to double tap a selection to fill. 2FA codes won’t fill right now, and I couldn’t get passkeys to work.

Thanks for taking time to provide the feedback.

> I had to double tap a selection to fill

The double tap to fill behaviour comes from a need to also support keyboard navigation but it is something we are keeping an eye on as you are not the first to report that it was unexpected to need to double click to fill.

> 2FA codes won't fill

I also observed that OTP codes do not fill and have an issue raised with apple and am working with them to try and resolve it

> passkeys

In the internal testing we have done on test sites, passkeys have been working, if you are prepared to share details of sites on which it failed for you, I'd be happy to investigate it further

I just tired a passkey and 2FA code with Amazon, which is the site where it didn't work yesterday. My first attempt today also didn't work. I then clicked the 1Password icon on my Mac's top toolbar and authenticated with my fingerprint. Then everything worked, including 2FA. A few observations. First, having to click/select a login option only once rather than twice is much preferred. Having the password autofill after selecting a login would be great (not sure if that's doable). From using Apple Passwords with native autofill for the past several months, I never have to open Apple Passwords before autofilling a password, nor do I have to have it open at login. I do have to authenticate with Touch ID for each autofill event. I'm not certain how these things operate with 3rd party managers. It would be nice to not have to open 1Password in order for autofill to work, but to have the app as an option for searching/managing/adding to my vault.

Thanks!

I am running the macOS Nightly that has native autofill implemented.

I can see that it is working as it comes up with credentials when having over login fields, but passkeys don't seem to work? When I select a saved passkey (EDIT: or a saved credential with username/password) via the macOS native autofill UI it then opens up a new window (for passkeys) asking if I want to scan a QR with my phone (no) or "More from 1Password" then when I select More from 1Password it eventually tells me it "Failed to connect to the 1Password.App?" (It skips straight to this when selecting a saved credential with a username and password)

1Password error

Am I missing something?

Version details:

1Password for Mac 8.12.18 (81218024)
1Password browser extension version 8.12.12.43 (Beta)
macOS 26.4.1

I got this error too after upgrading the extension or the version of nightly build 1password.(It used to work well  before the upgrade).

Interesting. So I downloaded the Night Build (version mentioned above) then had this error so figured I probably needed to install the Beta version of the Safari Extension (although I don't see why that would affect it on reflection because if it is using native AutoFill then it shouldn't need the extension??), and still got the same error/issue...

@1P_Dave Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Indeed. Native Autofill is completely broken in the nightly build due to this issue.

Hi, I replied in the thread mentioned in post above.  A recent internal change did break the mac native autofill integration in NIGHTLY and there is work ongoing to restore it, apologies if it caused any inconvenience
